Two of Jamaica's standout youth cyclists Melaika Russell and Jaequan Dixon are set to depart the island on Sunday to participate in a two-week training camp at the UCI World Cycling Centre Development Satellite Facility in
Trinidad and Tobago.

The Jamaica Cycling Federation (JCF) gratefully accepted the invitation, which was extended to second-year Under-19 and Under-23 cyclists, as the main purpose of the camp is to prepare cyclists for the upcoming Youth Pan American Games scheduled for August 9-23 in Asuncion.

"The Jamaica Cycling Federation is grateful for the opportunity for Russell and Dixon to participate in the camp, as this exposure and training in a world-class facility will do a lot for their development, and certainly for Russell’s preparation at the Junior Pan American Games in a few months," the JCF said in a statement.

Russell will be the sole Jamaican representative at the Youth Pan American Games, as the country earned the qualifying spot as a result of Llori Sharpe’s first-place finish at the Caribbean Championships in November last year.

Dixon, a “rising star,” has been performing very well at all local events since the start of the year. The soon-to-be 19-year-old is highly touted as one to watch for the future and, as such, will relish training at the world-class facility.

"The threat of losing the Velodrome, the only cycle track training facility in Jamaica, is worrying as the timeline for its removal closes in. However, the Federation is hopeful that the authorities will have a solution for an alternative soonest with our own local world-class facility," the JCF added.
