Head coach of the West Indies Men’s Test team, Daren Sammy, expressed happiness at the process through which Roston Chase was appointed as the team’s new captain.

The process began with a shortlist of candidates selected based on factors including Test experience, leadership qualities, and captaincy credentials.

The shortlisted players alongside Chase included John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves and Jomel Warrican.

Shai Hope, the current ODI and T20I captain, respectfully declined consideration to focus on his existing leadership roles.

Each candidate went through a detailed assessment process that included psychometric testing to evaluate leadership style, behavior, and overall suitability for the role, as well as structured interviews focused on tactical approach, communication skills, and team culture.

The interview panel consisted of Head Coach Daren Sammy, Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe, and Chairman of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee, Enoch Lewis.

The final recommendation was based on a weighted scoring system across six key areas: leadership, respect within the team, cricket knowledge, personal conduct, media and communication skills, and the results of the psychometric evaluation.

The top-ranked candidates were recommended as captain and vice-captain and subsequently approved by the CWI Board.

“The manner in which he got to the position, I truly enjoy the process that was followed,” Sammy said during a CWI media briefing officially unveiling Chase as captain on Monday.

Sammy went on to acknowledge Chase’s prowess as a leader both on and off the field during his times coaching him for both the St. Lucia Kings in the CPL and the West Indies white ball teams.

“That process brought us to Roston and, just being with him over the last four years, whether it be in T20s with the St. Lucia Kings or the West indies team, the leadership that he’s showed in the dressing room and on the field and the attention to detail, at the end of the process, it showed why he’s been vice-captain for a few of our teams at different periods,” Sammy said.

“I’m quite happy with what the process gave us and I know, as challenging as the road is ahead, I have a soldier who is calm under pressure and tactically sound and I’m looking forward to working with him,” he added.
