Team Jamaica bagged two medals at the end of the individual section of the Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships, currently underway in the Cayman Islands.
Vice-captain Mehar Trehan took silver when she lost two games to three against Eboni Atherley in the final of the under-19 girls' match-up. Still, getting two games off Atherley is considered significant, as that was the first time ever that any player bettered her in any games, though she rallied back to win the match.
Captain Sanjana Nalapati won her bronze medal in straight sets 3-0 over Gabrielle Turchiaro in a commanding performance. Elle Wilson, the other Under-19 girl in the championship, lost 0-3 to Milanna Lamontagne for the sixth-place play-off.
Karen Anderson, president of the recently renamed Jamaica Squash, lauded the team’s performance so far.
"Individuals are finished, and I’m extremely proud of how the kids have played over the last three days. Mehar Trehan captured the silver after a hard-fought match against the eventual winner, Eboni Etherley. Mehar was an overwhelming underdog, and to see her get two games, it rattled the champion," Anderson said.
"Sanjana Nalapati captured the bronze in Girls under 19. They’ve played with heart and desire and never gave up. The rest of the team has played above their pay grade, and it's been good to see them enjoying the experience but at the same time watching and learning from the more experienced players," she added.
In other results, Marley Price ended in ninth place in the Girls Under-13 category after defeating Peyton Marshall-Branche 3-1; Hinal Lohana went down to Clauda Bullmore 1-3 for eighth place in the Girls Under-15 category, while the other Under-15 girl, Isabelle Robinson, was defeated by McKenna Kyme 0-3.
The boys have endured a challenging time so far in the championship. Results in their matches show Under-15 player Ethan Miller placing fifth after his opponent Daniel Sealy retired hurt with the score at one all; Govind Venogopal ended ninth after beating Nixon Callender 3-2 in the Under-15 category; and Under-17 boy Max Henzell lost to Brenna Da Silva 1-3 for the 16th place. The lone Under-17 girl, Prya Stoddart, went down in straight sets, 0-3, to Thalia Knight.
The players are currently engaged in the doubles matches, after which they will play team matches.
