Captain Sanjana Nallapati teamed up with vice-captain Mehar Trehan to give Jamaica its first gold medal at the Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships at the South Sound Squash Club in the Cayman Islands on Wednesday.
The number one seeded U-19 doubles pair successfully defended its title against Barbados in an exciting battle of skill, fitness and excellent team coordination on the squash court.
Earlier in the championship Trehan copped a silver medal against the dangerous Eboni Atherley of Barbados in an epic match-up.
At the end of the match the scores were two games to Trehan and three games for Atherley but it signified the first time that Atherley was ever losing a game at the junior championship.
Nallapati got the bronze medal in straight sets 3-0 over Gabrielle Turchiaro in a commanding performance.
The boys U-19 doubles crown went to Trinidad & Tobago’s Seth Thong, who took silver in the singles, and Anthony Allum.
The unseeded duo delivered a fearless showing by defeating the third-seeded British Virgin Islands Virgin Islands’ team of Daniel and Oliver Henderson in straight sets.
Guyana took gold in the mixed doubles through Louis DaSilva and Avery Arjoon.
After beating Jamaica’s Ethan Miller and Elle Wilson in the semi-finals, the pair secured a 2-1 win over Barbados’ Luke Wilson and Eboni Atherley to claim the title.
They won the first set 11-8 before the Bajans levelled proceedings with an 11-8 win of their own in set two.
In a tightly fought third set, the Guyanese pair held their nerve to come out 11-10 winners.
DaSilva and Arjoon also won the respective U-19 singles titles earlier in the championship.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines got a pair of individual gold medals in the Boys U-11 and U-17 sections through Savante Padmore and Jayden George.
Padmore defeated Guyana’s Zion Hickerson 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5 to win the U-11 crown while George got the better of Cayman’s Charlie Makin 11-4, 11-9, 11-3 to claim his fifth successive CASA title.
