Despite another strong performance with bat and ball from captain Hayley Matthews, the West Indies Women suffered a 17-run loss to England Women to close out their T20 International series at the County Ground in Chelmsford on Monday.
Heather Knight made a 47-ball 66* while skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt hit 37 as the hosts posted 144-5 from their 20 overs after being put in to bat by Matthews.
The West Indian captain led the bowling effort with 3-32 from her four overs while debutant Jahzara Claxton was excellent in support, picking up 1-15 from her four overs.
The West Indies were restricted to 127-8 in their 20 overs, losing by 17 runs.
Matthews was once again the standout performer with the bat with 71 off 54 balls including 11 fours and a six while Realeanna Grimmond and Shabika Gajnabi hit 15 and 14, respectively.
Lauren Bell, Em Arlott, Charlie Dean and Linsey Smith all picked up two wickets for the victors.
The West Indian reply got off to the worst possible start when Qiana Joseph was bowled by Bell off the very first ball of the innings.
Matthews and Zaida James then combined to add 34 for the second wicket before James fell to Arlott for seven.
Grimmond joined Matthews and they added a further 29 for the third wicket.
Amazingly, Grimmond survived three dropped catches in consecutive balls in the first five balls of the 11th over before she finally fell off the last ball of that over to leave the West Indies 63-3 with nine overs left.
Matthews, undeterred by wickets falling at the other end, brought up her second fifty of the series halfway through the 13th over.
West Indies were 97-3 four balls into the 16th over when rain stopped play, affecting the momentum that the West Indian captain was building.
Not long after the resumption, hopes of a West Indian consolation victory were dashed when Gajnabi, Jahzara Claxton (0) and Matthews all fell within four balls of each other to leave the score at 113-6 one ball into the 18th over.
The West Indians lost two more wickets, Jannilea Glasgow for one and Afy Fletcher for six, eventually ending their innings 127-8 off 20 overs.
