Jamaica’s Shaquena Foote and Joanne Reid delivered career-best performances on Thursday night at the NCAA West Regionals in Bryan-College Station, Texas, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the women’s 400m.
Foote, a junior at San Diego State, continued her fine form this season by clocking a lifetime best of 50.95 seconds to finish second in Heat 3. Her time was tied for the third-fastest overall across all heats and was just behind USC’s Yemi John, who led the round with a personal best 50.79. Iowa State’s Rachel Joseph also clocked 50.95 to win Heat 6, matching Foote’s time down to the thousandth.
Meanwhile, Reid, a senior representing the University of Arkansas, also delivered the best race of her collegiate career, running 51.28 for second place in Heat 2. The time secured automatic qualification to the next round and marked a significant improvement for the Jamaican, who has been steadily progressing this season. Her Arkansas teammate, Rosey Effiong, won the heat in 50.90 — the second-fastest time overall.
Both Jamaicans were among the 24 athletes who advanced to the quarterfinals, with the top three finishers from each heat joined by the next six fastest times.
