Bahamas Aquatics Federation (BAF) President Algernon Cargill is brimming with confidence about the prospects of the country’s four-member delegation named to compete at the upcoming World Aquatics Championships, set for July 11 to August 3 in Singapore.

The team includes Bahamian Olympian Lamar Taylor, Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson, Victoria Russell, and Mark-Anthony Thompson—a blend of experience and emerging talent that Cargill believes will represent The Bahamas with distinction on the world stage.

"The team itself is a great team going to Singapore. Lamar certainly will hopefully be on the medal podium or near to it. We have very high expectations," Cargill said.

Taylor, who currently competes for the University of Tennessee, recently delivered a standout performance at the 53rd Bahamas National Swimming Championships in June. The national record holder in the 50m freestyle punched his ticket to the global event by hitting the ‘A’ qualifying mark with a 22.05-second opening split during the men’s 400m freestyle relay—a time that met the outright qualification standard.

Cargill noted that Taylor carries the burden of being the only swimmer on the team with an ‘A’ standard entry time but believes he is well-equipped to meet the challenge.

"There will be a lot of pressure on him to make the final of the 50m freestyle, but Lamar is ready. We are excited about this team, and this is one of the ways we continue to focus on not only swimming but also success at the senior level," Cargill stated.

Meanwhile, Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson proved her form at the national meet, as she finished first in both the 18-and-over 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke events. Russell and Mark-Anthony Thompson have also shown strong potential and will gain invaluable experience in Singapore.

The team is scheduled to depart next week as they gear up to compete among the world’s best.
