Mount Pleasant FA and defending champion Cavalier SC will meet in the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) final for a third consecutive season after both teams secured aggregate victories in their respective semi-final ties on Sunday.

Mount Pleasant were first to book their spot, holding Montego Bay United to a 1-1 draw in the semi-final second leg at Sabina Park to advance 2-1 on aggregate, following their 1-0 win in the first leg at Catherine Hall on Friday.

Their opener came courtesy of a dazzling piece of skill from 16-year-old Haitian star Franco Celestin, who delivered a stunning goal in the 38th minute. Celestin nutmegged Darnel Hosedales before threading the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Davonnie Burton from a seemingly impossible angle to double Mount Pleasant’s aggregate lead.

Montego Bay United responded with increased urgency, pushing for the equaliser and creating several opportunities late in the game. But with national defender Sue-Lae McCalla marshalling the backline, Mount Pleasant held firm to secure their second straight finals appearance.

In the evening’s second match, Cavalier SC overcame a spirited Arnett Gardens side with a hard-fought 1-0 win, thanks to a decisive 59th-minute strike from Jalmaro Calvin, sealing a 2-1 aggregate triumph.

Arnett dominated for long spells and appeared the more threatening side for much of the contest. However, Cavalier’s trademark resilience and tactical discipline came to the fore when it mattered most.

It was Dwayne “Busy” Atkinson, in trademark form, who unlocked the defence. The lively winger weaved through Arnett’s backline before unleashing a powerful shot that was parried by goalkeeper Tyrone Williams. Calvin reacted fastest, pouncing on the rebound and drilling home from a tight angle to send Cavalier to yet another final.

The two sides—widely regarded as the top clubs in Jamaica over the past three seasons—will renew their modern rivalry with the series tied at one win apiece: Mount Pleasant triumphed in 2023, while Cavalier responded in 2024.

Beyond domestic glory, both finalists have also secured qualification for the Concacaf Caribbean Cup, with Cavalier set to defend the regional title they won last year.

The 2025 final promises another thrilling chapter in this growing rivalry, as Mount Pleasant seek redemption and Cavalier chase back-to-back league titles. Football fans can expect fireworks when the country’s two top sides collide once more for Jamaican club football’s biggest prize.
