When the Racers Grand Prix returns to the National Stadium on Saturday, it won’t just be about blistering times and world-class athletes—it will be a full-spectrum experience designed to entertain, engage, and elevate track and field fans of every kind.
From high-stakes sprint duels to luxury cabanas and a dedicated Kiddies Village, this year’s staging—under the guidance of Racers Grand Prix CEO Devon Blake—has been carefully curated to offer more than just a meet. It’s an experience.
“We’re not just putting on a track meet, we’re putting on a show,” Blake told SportsMax.TV. “Fans want to feel like they’re part of something bigger. Whether you’re track-savvy or just here for the vibe, we’ve created something for everyone.”
Perhaps the most talked-about upgrade is the introduction of VIP cabanas stationed along the cycle track. Each cabana holds up to 12 guests, offering VIP parking, exclusive food truck access, and up-close interaction with athletes.
“You’re right next to the action. It’s easier to get autographs, selfies, and just soak in the energy,” said Blake. “It’s a luxury setup—an immersive way to enjoy world-class athletics with your crew.” With space constraints due to the long jump area, only three cabanas will be available—underscoring the exclusivity of the offering. “It’s a premium experience, and we wanted it to feel that way,” Blake added.
Also new this year is the Kiddies Village, located just outside the grandstand near the netball courts. The space will feature bounce houses and a play zone, giving children a safe and fun environment while parents enjoy the meet. “This way, families can come out together,” said Blake. “There’s something for the kids, so parents aren’t distracted or rushing home. It’s a full day out.”
While the experience takes centre stage, the track action promises to deliver headline moments. One of the most anticipated showdowns is in the men’s 100m, where Jamaica’s Gary Card will square off against Bayanda Walaza, the reigning World U20 100m and 200m champion from South Africa. Walaza has already clocked 9.92 seconds this season and is part of a South African quartet making their first appearance at the National Stadium, including Sinesipho Dambile, Gift Leotlela, and Naeem Jack.
“Walaza has been making waves on the senior circuit,” Blake said. “To see him go up against a rising talent like Gary Card—it’s going to be electric.”
In the women’s sprints, the Tia vs Tina Clayton showdown is expected to bring heat, while in the sprint hurdles, the trio of Devynne Charlton, Yanique Thompson, and the rarely seen two-time World U20 gold medallist Kerrica Hill will push for dominance. Unfortunately, world champion Tobi Amusan, who was originally slated to run the flat 100m, has withdrawn due to injury.
Charlton, the world indoor 60m hurdles record holder from the Bahamas, headlines the hurdles lineup and is expected to deliver a crowd-pleasing performance. Also returning is Christopher Taylor, who will line up in the 200m in what fans hope marks the next chapter in his comeback. And while Oblique Seville has been recovering from a minor injury, Blake confirmed he’ll be ready to race against Kishane Thompson in another can’t-miss sprint matchup.
The Grand Prix’s recent three-ticket giveaway promotion was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, with over 5,000 tickets claimed online—a clear indication that local interest is surging. “We’ve been out on the streets doing promotions, and the buzz is there,” said Blake. “We love celebrating our athletes when they win medals, but now it’s about celebrating the journey. Racers Grand Prix is part of that journey.”
With its blend of elite performances, premium hospitality, family fun, and authentic Jamaican energy, Saturday’s Racers Grand Prix is more than just a meet. It’s a reminder that when athletics meets entertainment, the result is magic.
