Olympic bronze medallist Rasheed Broadbell sent a clear message to his rivals ahead of the Jamaican national championships later this month with a commanding performance at the Racers Grand Prix in Kingston on Saturday night.
In a thrilling men’s 110m hurdles contest, Broadbell held off a fast-finishing Trey Cunningham of the United States to win in a season’s best 13.06 seconds—a new meet record—just two-hundredths of a second ahead of the American (13.08).
Broadbell, who has been building steadily throughout the season, was pleased with the performance but believes there’s still room for improvement, particularly in his start.
“Each time I run, I get better and better,” he said. “By the grace of God, I came out there to kill 10 barriers and I feel like tonight I did that clean. The aim was to get out fast, and I didn’t do that today, but it’s OK. I’m all right with the time.”
Acknowledging his past struggles out of the blocks, Broadbell revealed he has been focusing on that aspect of his race, especially knowing the quality of the competition he faces.
“The fast guy I know—his first six are really good,” he said, referring to Cunningham. “So I’m trying to be there with the first six, and if I’m in front at that point, who knows what the time’s going to be?”
Despite being slightly behind midway through the race, Broadbell trusted his top-end speed and executed his finish to perfection.
“Coming off the last hurdle and heading to the line, I don’t think anyone has that kind of speed like me,” he said. “So I just trusted my body, came through, and had a little fun at the end.”
With the Jamaican national trials set for June 26–29 at the National Stadium, Broadbell is brimming with confidence and eager to solidify his place on the team for the World Championships in Tokyo this September.
“I know how I executed this one and how much energy I put into it,” he said. “I’m feeling really great. I can’t wait till the next two weeks.”
