Excitement is building around the 2025 edition of the Mayberry Junior Caribbean Tennis Championship, as the tournament makes a bold leap forward by officially opening its courts to junior players from across the Caribbean for the first time in its history.

Set to serve off from July 7-11 at the Liguanea Club in Kingston, the championship’s expanded scope marks a turning point for junior tennis in the region. After a two-year break caused by inclement weather, both tournament director Lockett McGregor and title sponsor Mayberry Investments Limited are thrilled about the tournament’s revival and evolution.

With the inclusion of international athletes and the introduction of the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) system, this year’s competition will offer young players the chance to earn globally recognised ranking points, critical credentials for university scholarships, and potential collegiate tennis careers.

"We are very happy to be able to afford our juniors this opportunity—not only on the local side but also on the international side. Opening the tournament to the wider Caribbean is a major milestone. It gives our young athletes access to real pathways that can shape their future in the sport," McGregor said during the event's launch.

While entry numbers have not met past expectations, McGregor underscored the importance of corporate support in re-energizing the championship.

"The kids have always looked forward to this tournament. It’s one of the most sought-after events for junior players. But this year, the response hasn’t been what we hoped, which is why Mayberry’s support is more critical than ever. It helps bring back the energy, visibility, and credibility the event deserves," he noted.

Beyond competition, the tournament is also designed to replicate the professionalism and structure of elite international events.

"We try to run this tournament so that our young athletes are exposed to tennis being organised on a different level. That kind of structure is important to their growth, both on and off the court," McGregor added.

Meanwhile, Desiree Wheeler, marketing manager at Mayberry Investments, emphasized the company’s dedication to youth empowerment through sport.

"At Mayberry, we’re not just about investments. We believe in investing in people, especially our youth. This tournament gives them the chance to shine, grow in confidence, and envision a future that goes beyond borders. With the new regional format and the addition of UTR, we’re proud to play a role in taking junior tennis to new heights," Wheeler said.
