After a career defined by resilience, globe-trotting journeys, and national pride, Siobhan Wilson, the dynamic Reggae Girlz winger, has decided to call time on her professional football career.
The 30-year-old announced her retirement on social media Friday, which marked the end of a chapter that saw her rise to international acclaim and become a beloved figure both in Jamaica and abroad.
"This has honestly been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. But I’ve decided to retire from professional football," Wilson wrote.
Wilson’s heartfelt farewell post was soaked in gratitude as she reflected on the journey that began in her youth and eventually led to her debut for Jamaica’s senior women’s team in 2022—a moment she once described as “a dream come true.”
"Football has given me so much—it’s taken me around the world, allowed me to play at the international level for Jamaica, and connected me to teammates who I can now call family,” she said.
Born and raised in England, Wilson’s football journey spanned multiple countries and continents. Her club career included stints in Spain, the United States, Italy, and England, where she most recently turned out for Birmingham City in the FA Women’s Championship but was loaned out to Southampton. Yet, it was with the Reggae Girlz that she found a deeper sense of purpose and pride.
Wilson’s time with the national team came during a crucial period of growth and visibility for women’s football in Jamaica. Her presence added flair and experience to a team brimming with ambition, and she contributed to the momentum that saw the Reggae Girlz qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, following their historic 2019 appearance.
News of her retirement prompted an outpouring of love and admiration from teammates and supporters.
"It was a pleasure to share the pitch with you, Shiv. Go smash it,” wrote team captain Allyson Swaby.
Star striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw added, “Enjoy retirement and good luck on your next path.”
Scotland international Christie Murray, who shared the pitch with Wilson at Birmingham City, also shared a touching message.
"You should be so proud of your career, Shiv. I’m grateful football allowed our paths to cross and for our friendship. I’m excited to see what’s next for you," Murray shared.
Reggae Girlz team manager Crystal Walters also wished Wilson the best in her post-football life.
While Wilson’s decision to retire was clearly not made lightly, she emphasized that it was the right time for her to shift focus toward personal passions and business pursuits.
"It’s a deeply personal decision. But I feel like now is the right time to step away and focus on my business and other opportunities. The game will always hold a special place in my heart, and while I'm stepping away from the pitch, I'll always be a fan of the sport that gave me so much," Wilson noted.
"I'm incredibly grateful for every moment, every club, every fan, and everyone who's supported me along the way. Football will always be a part of me, but I'm excited for the future and to see what this next chapter holds. Thank you for everything," she ended.
