Bermuda and Grenada kept their dreams of reaching the final round of the Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers alive, as they blanked the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas 5-0 and 6-0 in their respective second-round Group A and B encounters on Wednesday.

With the group winners and runners-up advancing to the final round, both nations head into their final group matches with everything to play for.

Bermuda surged to second in Group A with four points from three matches, two behind unbeaten leaders Honduras (six points from two games). Cuba (three points), the Cayman Islands (three points), and Antigua and Barbuda (one point) round out the group.

Playing at the Dame Flora Duffy National Sports Centre in Devonshire Parish, Bermuda took an early lead in the 12th minute when Zeiko Lewis converted from the penalty spot.

Djair Parfitt-Williams doubled the advantage in the 54th, as he finished off a move started by Lewis, before returning the favour with an assist for Kole Hall, who rifled home a stunning long-range strike in the 64th.

Reggie Lambe extended the lead in the 79th with a composed finish inside the box from a corner, and Julian Carpenter capped the win in the 85th when he finished  a rebound following Rahzir Smith-Jones’ initial shot.

Bermuda will hope to consolidate their hold on the runner-up position when they travel to face Cuba on Tuesday at Estadio Antonio Maceo in Santiago de Cuba, while the Cayman Islands conclude their campaign at home against Honduras on Saturday at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, Grenada produced a ruthless performance at the Kirani James National Stadium in St. George’s to move up to third place in Group B with four points. They now trail leaders Costa Rica (six points) and Trinidad and Tobago, also four points but ahead on goal difference. St. Kitts and Nevis (three points) and winless Bahamas complete the standings.

Jermaine Francis opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he nodded home a pinpoint cross from Regan Charles-Cook. Charles-Cook added a second assist in the 36th, as he sent Darius Johnson on his way for a breakaway goal.

Keishean Francois made it 3-0 in the 58th minute with a powerful left-footed effort from a tight angle, before Joshua Isaac slotted in a fourth in the 72nd. Kayden Harrack got on the scoresheet five minutes later, and Saydrel Lewis closed out the rout with a header in the 90th.

With the win, Grenada will be high on confidence heading into a crucial showdown against St. Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday at Warner Park Football Stadium in Basseterre. The Bahamas, who remain at the bottom of the group and out of contention, wrap up against Costa Rica on Saturday at Wildey Turf in Bridgetown, Barbados.
