Jamaican sprint hurdler Jerome Campbell continues to make history at the University of Northern Colorado, earning multiple honours at the school’s Annual Athletics Banquet this week. The 22-year-old junior was named Most Outstanding Male Student-Athlete for the 2024-25 academic year, recognized for maintaining a GPA above 3.3 and his outstanding performances on the track.
Campbell was selected to the Male All-Bear Team for 2023-24, a distinction reserved for the university’s top four male student-athletes. It marks the third consecutive year that Campbell has earned these accolades—a testament to his consistency, discipline, and commitment to both sport and scholarship.
“Very elated and appreciative of these accomplishments,” Campbell told Sportsmax.TV in an exclusive interview. “Third year in a row I have received this and for that I am grateful. It goes to show how consistent I am and I never let up. I keep on going and keep getting better. Never satisfied—more work to do always.”
His award-laden season is the result of a string of outstanding performances on the track. Campbell made school history in March when he became the first University of Northern Colorado athlete to reach a final at the World Athletics Indoor Championships. In Nanjing, China, he advanced through the heats and semifinals with matching 7.61s before placing seventh in the final in 7.71. He was the third-youngest finalist in a world-class field.
Earlier in the month, Campbell captured silver in the 60m hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach. He clocked a personal best 7.49, finishing just behind Auburn’s Ja’Kobe Tharp, who ran a facility record 7.45.
He also made his mark at the conference level, setting a Big Sky Indoor Championship record of 7.63 in the 60m hurdles and later lowering it to 7.58—the fastest ever by a Big Sky athlete in the event. His exploits earned him Big Sky Athlete of the Week honours in January and a year-end ranking of No. in the world.
Campbell’s versatility was also on display this season. He posted a 200m time of 21.55 at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener to rank first in the Big Sky Conference and 19th nationally.
With each passing season, Campbell continues to elevate his profile as one of Jamaica’s most promising sprint hurdlers and a standout collegiate athlete in the United States.
