Jamaica’s Lamara Distin and Tajay Gayle were among the podium finishers at Tuesday’s Paavo Nurmi Games, a World Athletics Continental Tour-Gold meet in Turku, Finland.
Distin, the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, had a best clearance of 1.91m for second in the women’s high jump behind Great Britain’s Morgan Lake who cleared also cleared 1.91m for victory.
The Netherlands’ Britt Weerman cleared a season’s best 1.88m in third.
Distin had a clean card 1.80m to 1.88m before needing three attempts to clear 1.91m while Lake, who entered the competition at 1.84m, cleared that, 1.88m and 1.91m at the first attempt.
Both Distin and Lake had three failures at 1.94m.
Elsewhere, 2019 World champion Tajay Gayle had a best jump of 7.97m for third in the men’s long jump won by Italian sensation Mattia Furlani with 8.11m while Australian Liam Adcock was second with 8.05m.
After a foul on his first attempt, Gayle recorded a mild 7.29m before another foul in round three.
He found some sort of rhythm in round four with 7.75m before producing his best jump in the fifth round.
Unfortunately, he pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury during his run up for his sixth-round attempt, hopefully nothing too serious with the JAAA Puma National Junior and Senior Championships right around the corner.
Olympic champions Keshorn Walcott and Roje Stona narrowly missed out on podium places in their respective events.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Walcott, the 2012 Olympic champion, threw 81.91m for fourth in the men’s javelin behind Kenyan Julius Yego (83.08m), Poland’s Cyprian Mrzyglod (82.90m) and Finland’s Toni Keranen (81.96m).
Jamaica’s Stona, who claimed gold in Paris last year, was fourth in the men’s discus throw with 66.84m as the top three all threw beyond 70m.
Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh took the win with 70.61m ahead of Australia’s Matthew Denny (70.52m) and Sweden’s Daniel Stahl (70.19m).
