The Bahamas’ Carifta teams were showered with praise, gifts, and national pride on Wednesday as Minister of Youth, Sports, and Culture Mario Bowleg saluted their historic performances, which he views as a shining example of what is possible “when a small nation dares to dream big and move as one.”

The country’s Carifta swimming and track and field squads were officially recognised in the House of Assembly following their outstanding showing in Trinidad and Tobago over the Easter weekend. Gifts from sponsors and glowing tributes marked the occasion as the athletes' remarkable achievements were highlighted.

"About 120 Bahamian athletes went to Trinidad and Tobago, not just as competitors, but as warriors of national pride. They carried the spirit of over 400,000 Bahamians on their shoulders, standing tall as a beacon of unity, strength, and purpose. This was more than just sports; it was a statement and a declaration that the heart of The Bahamas beats loud and proud on any stage," Bowleg declared in his address.

The swimming team extended its dynasty with a seventh consecutive Carifta title — and ninth in the last 10 editions — amassing a staggering 979 points, well ahead of Jamaica (795.50) and host nation Trinidad and Tobago (735). The team bagged a total of 74 medals, including 27 gold, 23 silver, and 24 bronze, once again cementing The Bahamas’ dominance in the pool.

On the track, the Bahamian squad also made headlines, finishing second behind perennial champions Jamaica, but not without causing a stir. The team claimed 16 gold medals, 13 silver, and eight bronze, for a total of 37 medals — the most golds in a single Carifta meet for The Bahamas since 1984, the last time they won the overall title.

"This was not just a team — it was a national force that invaded the southern Caribbean island of Trinidad. They represented what is possible when a small nation dares to dream big and move as one. These athletes made history, not just with their speed and strength, but with their heart. Let us all continue to support, celebrate, and invest in our youth because when they rise, The Bahamas rises with them. Together, we are one people, one team, and one unstoppable nation," Bowleg said.

To honour the athletes’ efforts, the Ministry partnered with Aliv to present UNNECTO smartphones and a month of free data to all Carifta medalists across both teams. Non-medalists were not left out, receiving Samsung headsets and John Bull gift certificates, while team officials were treated to day passes to Breezes Resort & Spa as tokens of appreciation.

“The youth of today are the champions of tomorrow. Their dreams, courage, and unwavering spirit are the forces that will shape the future of sports," the minister noted.

Bahamas now looks ahead to next year’s Carifta Aquatic Championships in Martinique, with its swimmers aiming to extend their unprecedented run, while the athletes will head back to Grenada for the track and field event.
