Jamaican’s seven-foot-two centre Romaro Gill has confirmed he will represent Team Jamaica this summer in the 2027 FIBA World Cup pre-qualifying tournament, giving the national programme a major boost as it rebuilds toward global contention.
The 30-year-old former student at St Thomas Technical in Jamaica, made the announcement via social media on Monday, declaring his excitement to join the squad being assembled by Coach Rick Turner.
“It’s an honour to be invited to play for the Jamaican national team this summer to prepare for the FIBA World Cup,” Gill said. “I’m super excited, can’t wait to get there and start putting in the work. Looking forward to working with Coach Turner and the team he has put together. Can’t wait to see you guys.”
Gill, who currently plays professionally in Spain for Club Ourense Baloncesto in the LEB Oro league, brings elite rim protection and veteran experience to the squad. The towering center, known for his shot-blocking prowess, was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player in 2020 during his final season at Seton Hall University. That year, he averaged 7.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks per game, while shooting nearly 63 per cent from the field.
He led the Big East in blocks per game and was only the third Seton Hall player to top the conference in rejections, joining former NBA talents Eddie Griffin and Samuel Dalembert. During a remarkable five-game stretch in early 2020, Gill averaged 5.8 blocks, including two standout eight-block performances against Providence and Georgetown.
Before his breakout senior year, Gill developed at Vincennes University, where he averaged 5.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game as a sophomore, ranking 10th in the NJCAA for total blocks.
Though undrafted in the 2020 NBA Draft, Gill was picked up as a free agent by the Utah Jazz and later found his way into Europe’s competitive circuit.
Now, with a return to international duty on the horizon, Gill is poised to become a cornerstone for Jamaica’s frontcourt as they aim to secure qualification for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
“We’re so excited for Romaro Gill to represent Team Jamaica this summer at the 2027 FIBA World Cup Pre-qualifying tournament,” read the official announcement. “His presence will be massive.”
Jamaica’s basketball federation is expected to unveil the full roster for the pre-qualifiers in the coming weeks.
