Joshua Kimmich felt Germany paid the price for profligacy as they were beaten 2-0 by France in the Nations League third-place play-off in Stuttgart on Sunday.

Goals in each half from Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise consigned Julian Nagelsmann's side to defeat, with Denis Undav having a goal ruled out with the score still at 1-0.

Mike Maignan twice denied Niclas Fullkrug and also made a great stop from Karim Adeyemi in a frantic opening in which Germany made the brighter start.

Indeed, they had more shots (20 to 15) and a better expected goals (xG) total (2.55 to 2.33) than France, but still ended up on the losing side.

Speaking to RTL after the game, Bayern Munich ace Kimmich said: "Especially if you look at the first half, we should be leading 3-0 after six minutes.

"Then we went into the break a goal behind. We lost patience too early and lost our structure in the second half. We made too many mistakes and gave them what they wanted.

"We talked a lot about the first game [against Portugal]. I think we showed what we're capable of in the first half today, that we're able to react.

"We simply weren't good enough in front of goal. Overall, we simply can't lose patience so quickly."

Team-mate Adeyemi agreed with his team-mate, stating Germany – beaten by Portugal in the semi-finals – were too wasteful in front of goal.

" Our goal is to win every game. We could have done that today; we should have taken our chances," he told ZDF.

"We didn't manage that today. If we take our chances in the future, we will win our games."
