Despite suffering a crushing 108-run defeat to England in the first ODI of their three-match series, the West Indies Women’s team found a silver lining in the latest ICC Women’s ODI Batting Rankings, as a few players made notable upward moves.
All-rounder Aaliyah Alleyne and Qiana Joseph were among the Caribbean bright spots, climbing the rankings after spirited performances in the defeat at Derby. Alleyne moved up 15 places to 76th following her 44 off 46 balls, while Joseph’s career-best 62 from 74 deliveries saw her rise 22 spots to 82nd. Captain Hayley Matthews remained steady at fourth in the batting standings after contributing a solid 48.
Meanwhile, England dominated both on the field and in the rankings. Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont made the most significant gains in the ICC Women’s ODI Batting Rankings. Jones vaulted three places to seventh after her maiden ODI century, a tidy 122 off 121 deliveries, while Beaumont climbed two spots to 11th following her 107 off 104 balls, her 11th career century.
Elsewhere in the rankings, England’s Alice Capsey jumped eight places to 103rd after a lively 24-run cameo.
Debutant Linsey Smith added further gloss to England’s dominant display, claiming a five-wicket haul (5-36) that not only secured the win but also earned her an entry into the ICC Bowling Rankings at 173rd.
The top six in the ICC Women’s Bowling Rankings remain unchanged, led by England’s Sophie Ecclestone. However, Matthews’ two wickets for 49 runs helped her climb from ninth to seventh among bowlers, which further solidified her status as one of the premier all-rounders in the women’s game.
The series continues with the second ODI set for Leicester on Wednesday, and the finale to follow in Taunton on Saturday.
