Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel is back in maroon colours, this time on the world stage at the World Championship of Legends (WCL) in England. Known for his raw pace and aggressive spells, Gabriel shared his thoughts on returning to competitive cricket, reuniting with former teammates, and what keeps his fire burning.
Question: Shannon, how does it feel to be back in action for the World Championship of Legends?
Gabriel: It feels really good. Once you’re a fast bowler, the fire never really goes out. Getting the chance to put on the West Indies colours again – even in this legends format – is something I couldn’t say no to. The passion’s still there, the body feels strong, and I’m excited to get out there.
Question: You’re known for your express pace. Are we going to see that same intensity in this tournament?
Gabriel: (Laughs) I still believe in bowling fast. I might not be 22 anymore, but I’m still sharp. The pace is still there, and I plan to use it. Once I cross that line, it’s the same mindset: be aggressive and look to pick up wickets.
Question: You’ll be playing alongside legends like Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, and Sheldon Cottrell, your former new-ball partner. What’s it like reuniting with those guys?
Gabriel: It’s special. We’ve been through some battles together, whether it’s Test cricket, T20s, or training camps. There’s a bond that never goes away. To share the field with them again, to laugh, to compete. It feels like coming home.
Question: How important is this Legends League for fans and for you personally?
Gabriel: Very important. This format gives the fans a chance to see their favourite players again, to reconnect with the excitement we brought during our prime. And for us, it’s a way to celebrate the game, give back to the sport, and show we’ve still got a lot to offer.
Question: What are your goals for the tournament?
Gabriel: Simple. Win games, enjoy the cricket, and leave everything on the field. I’ve always played with pride and aggression. I want to bring that same energy to this tournament. And who knows? Lifting another trophy with these guys would be a dream.
Question: One last thing. What message do you have for West Indies fans watching this WCL?
Gabriel: Thanks for sticking with us all these years. Whether it’s Test cricket or this legends tournament, we carry the flag with pride. Keep supporting us. We’re going out there to make you proud once again.
