It was a night to forget for Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers, as the Caribbean duo endured a failure that mirrored Islamabad United’s complete capitulation in a record-breaking Pakistan Super League (PSL) clash, as Quetta Gladiators produced the highest total in the tournament's history—263-3—and bulldozed their way to a 109-run win at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
On a night when batting records tumbled like dominos, Holder and Mayers were out of sorts with both bat and ball. Holder’s four overs were punished for 52 runs without a wicket, while Mayers’ contribution with the bat lasted just one ball. Holder did not fare much better, as he managed just three runs before falling to the onslaught of the Gladiators’ dominant bowling, as Islamabad United were condemned to a fourth consecutive defeat.
Scores: Quetta Gladiators 263-3 (20 overs); Islamabad United 154 all out (19.3 overs)
After being sent to bat, the Gladiators’ innings was nothing short of a blitzkrieg as Rilee Rossouw led with a blistering 104 off 46 balls, while Hasan Nawaz had an unbeaten 100 off 45 as Quetta became the first team in PSL history to have two centurions in a single innings—and only the 10th pair ever in men’s T20s to achieve the feat. Their partnership powered the Gladiators to the highest-ever total in the PSL and in men’s T20s on Pakistani soil
Rossouw was all elegance and aggression, as 88.46% of his runs came in boundaries—14 fours and six sixes—a PSL record. Nawaz, meanwhile, smashed nine sixes in a fearless display of raw power, the most ever by a Gladiators batter in a PSL innings.
Adding to Islamabad’s misery, the Gladiators plundered 160 runs in the final 10 overs to equal the record for most runs scored between the 11th and 20th overs in PSL history. Islamabad's only success came with the scalps of Saud Shakeel (23), Finn Allen (five), and Roussouw, who fell in the 16th over.
When Islamabad came out to chase the mammoth 264, they needed a strong start, but instead, they imploded. Mayers, entrusted with opening duties, was trapped lbw first ball by Mohammad Amir, while Sahibzada Farhan (one) followed moments later. From there, Islamabad found themselves at 86-8 when Holder fell to Abrar Ahmed.
Only Imad Wasim, batting at number nine, showed any fight with a gritty 56, which was a new PSL record for the highest score from number eight or lower. But the effort came far too late.
Amir ended with 3-6, with support from Mohammed Wasim (2-28) and Ahmed (2-17).
The defeat was Islamabad United’s heaviest in PSL history, as they have now slipped to third on 10 points, with the Gladiators in pole position on 13 points.
