Two-time Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo could return to competition as early as June, according to her father and coach Shaun Miller, who revealed that plans are in place to find a “very soft” meet to mark her tentative comeback.

“She will probably be ready for a light race in June sometime,” Miller told Sportsmax.TV. “That’s just as much as I could pretty much say as far as where we are in training. If everything stays on schedule, you should be seeing her opening up in a very soft meet, probably somewhere in the Florida area.”

Miller-Uibo, now 31, suffered a leg injury during the 200m heats at the Bahamian Olympic Trials in 2024, which forced her to miss the 400m final. Although she secured a lane at the Paris Olympic Games through her world ranking, the injury resurfaced during her 400m heat. She pulled up on the curve and did not finish, bringing her title defence to an abrupt end and ruling her out of the repechage round.

Now, nearly a year later, her father confirmed she has only recently resumed training and is still working her way back to full fitness.

“She’s not 100 per cent right now, but she’s getting there,” he said. “We’re just trying to get the wheels back on right now. She looks pretty solid in training—one or two little small issues, but nothing much to really get worried about. Just caution right now.”

Miller-Uibo gave birth to her first child, a baby boy named Maicel, in April 2023. Since then, injuries have delayed her full return to competition, but her father said she is motivated to compete again—not just for herself, but for her family.

“She has a very young family, but her plans are hopefully that her kid should be able to get an opportunity to see her do a few races before the retirement comes up,” he shared. “She has plans on at least attempting to make a good, strong comeback.”

Asked whether she will focus on the 400m or the 200m moving forward, Miller said: “Probably will be leaning more towards the 400m. We just want to make sure that she stays a little healthy right now—that’s the main issue.”

Coaching a two-time Olympic champion is no easy task, especially when that athlete is also your daughter. But Miller remains encouraged by signs of progress, even in the face of setbacks.

“You would recall, the only races she had really successfully completed [since returning] were all relays, but they were all 49 [second] splits,” he noted. “Which means there is a level of endurance still there.”

Now cautiously optimistic, Shaun Miller says the goal is simply to get her back on track—literally—by mid-2025.

“She’s not rushing it,” he said. “We just want to get her back out there healthy.”
