Bahamian VJ Edgecombe now knows where he will take the first steps on his journey in professional basketball as he was drafted third overall by the Philadelphia 76ers on day one of the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday night.
Edgecombe, who was part of the Bahamian national team last summer alongside multiple current NBA players, is an explosive 19-year-old guard who could be a long-term complement to All-Star Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia's backcourt.
In his lone year at Baylor University, Edgecombe averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game in 33 games.
He shot 43.6% from the field, 34.0% from three and 78.2% from the free throw line.
He was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Year and named to both the All-Big 12 and Big 12 All-Freshman teams.
Whom the Sixers were targeting with the pick was a matter of debate throughout the pre-draft process, and Edgecombe told ESPN that he wasn't sure he'd be the selection until his name was called.
"No, I had no clue what was going on," he said.
"I was like, I'm just living in the moment until they tell me that I'm going there when I was at the table. Like 15 seconds before they drafted me, before the commissioner called my name. They didn't tell me nothing. It was still up in the air about what was going on."
