The Dominican Republic’s good run of form was halted Sunday when they lost to Russia at the Volleyball Nation’s League in Italy.
They went down in a competitive five-set battle 18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 8-15.
Both teams showed their intent early with aggressive starts. The DR team was solid in defence at the net and in the backcourt but Russia’s defence was just as good and they outscored the Caribbean queens to take the first set.
The second set was just as competitive as both teams improved defensively resulting in longer rallies. Outstanding setting by Frica Marte created helped DR create more scoring chances, which they capitalized on to pulled away from the Russians and take the second set to level the score at 1-1.
Russia took total control of the third set during which they led 18-8 at one point. The DR attempted to intensify their aggression but were met with stout resistance, forcing them to rethink their strategy. They were able to claw their way back into the set but the Russians held firm to win the set.
DR made a change in their line-up with Isabel Pena replacing Captain Brens Rivera that paid immediate dividends as she impacted the attacking play alongside Bethania De La Cruz which helped them win the fourth set.
Russia was resistant with their defensive effort but Pena’s fresh legs proved to be too much for their fatigued players. The Dominican Republic came out on top and pushed the game to a decisive fifth set.
Russia found a second wind in the final set. They dominated play against a faltering DR's defence, which resulted in them not being able to create second-chance attempts to score. Meanwhile, their opponents applied the pressure with increasing intensity that resulted in victory.
Russian outside hitter Nataliya Goncharova was the game’s overall top scorer with 31 points inclusive of 30 kills and one block. For the Dominican Republic, Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez was once again their top scorer, this time with 23 points - 22 kills and an ace.
With this loss, the Dominican Republic dropped one place to eighth in the standings with 11 points from seven games. They play Turkey today.

Paulino produces spirited anchor leg to help Dominican Republic book spot in Mixed 4x400m final at World Athletics Relays
Reigning World 400m champion Marileidy Paulino produced a special anchor leg to help the Dominican Republic book their spot in the final of the Mixed 4x400m relay on day one of the World Athletics Relays at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau on Saturday.
Paulino got the baton down the field and produced a 48.93 split on her anchor leg to move her country up to second (3:14.39) and secure a spot in Saturday’s final alongside the Netherlands who won the heat in 3:12.16.
Both teams also secured their spots in the field at the Olympics in Paris later this year.
Jamaica (Roshawn Clarke, Leah Anderson, Rusheen McDonald, Janieve Russell) ran 3:14.83 and hosts the Bahamas (Alonzo Russell, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Steven Gardiner, Shania Adderley) ran 3:14.86 but failed to advance to the final after finishing third and fourth, respectively.
Both teams will get another opportunity to make it to Paris in the second round of Olympic qualifying on Sunday.
USA (3:11.52), Ireland (3:12.50), Belgium (3:13.18) Poland (3:13.53), Nigeria (3:13.79) and France (3:14.71) make up the eight teams to advance to the final.
Tonali set for August return after receiving suspended two-month ban from FA
Sandro Tonali has been given a suspended two-month ban by the Football Association (FA) after admitting to breaching gambling rules.
The sanction means the Newcastle United midfielder will be eligible to return to action on August 27, 2024, when his 10-month suspension issued by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) expires.
FIFA ratified that ban, causing it to become applicable worldwide, after Tonali admitted to placing bets on matches as part of an investigation into unregulated betting platforms in Italy.
In March, the FA charged Tonali with breaching English football's gambling rules 50 times between August and October last year, leading to fears his spell out of the game could be extended.
However, on Thursday it was confirmed that the FA had suspended Tonali's punishment for the duration of the 2024-25 season, meaning he can return in August if he does not reoffend.
In a statement, Newcastle said: "Sandro Tonali has been given a suspended two-month ban from competitive football by an independent regulatory commission after self-declaring breaches of FA betting rules.
"He has also been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA as to his future conduct.
"Provided that he does not commit any further breach of the FA betting rules during the suspension period, Sandro will not serve any part of the two-month sanction.
"As acknowledged by the FA in the independent regulatory commission's written reasons, the level of assistance Sandro has provided by self-referring and fully cooperating with a subsequent investigation is extraordinary and unprecedented.
"Sandro is continuing to follow a therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club's full support and will continue to train with his team-mates."
Tonali's initial ban has limited him to just eight Premier League appearances since he joined Newcastle from Milan in a £55million deal, while he will also miss Italy's Euro 2024 campaign.
