First match of ESports series goes to super over

The first match of the inaugural virtual CPL was a run filled spectacle as Trinbago Knight Riders’ Colin Munro emerged victorious against Ashmead Nedd after a Super Over finish.  

 Guyana Amazon Warriors batted first and boundaries were flying immediately. Shimron Hetmyer kept the pressure on the bowlers as he dispatched three sixes but it was Brandon King who was the star player, making 74 (14). 

It was left to Dwayne Bravo to bowl the last to try and keep the total down to something that his team could chase with Hetmyer on strike. He took up where King had left off as he too brought up a half-century, this one from 11 balls. 

The Warriors closed their five overs with a score of 139/2 and with Munro a self-confessed novice at this game there were few who would have thought he would come close to winning this match. 

It wasn’t the perfect start with the Knight Riders with Lendl Simmons going for 10 from the third ball of their innings. It was when Munro took control of himself that the fireworks started as he hit four sixes in his 25 off six balls.  

TKR were still behind the rate, even after Sunil Narine hit the first five balls off a Romario Shepherd over and then more sixes coming from the bat of Kieron Pollard when he faced Imran Tahir. 

 Going into the last over the Knight Riders needed an improbable 35 to win the game. Darren Bravo made a mockery of that near-impossible target, hitting five sixes in a row before a four tied the scores and took it to a Super Over. 

 Munro batted first in the Super Over and carried on where he had left off, smashing another 33 runs from his six balls with Pollard once again doing damage. That left Nedd’s side needing 34 to win. 

 As in the match itself, it came down to the last ball. Nedd needed a six to win it, anything else and Munro would beat his more experienced opponent. Nedd could only manage a four and it was Munro and his TKR team who emerged victoriously.

    England's white-ball captain Jos Buttler says the team had their pride dented by last year's 50-over World Cup failure, as they look to set things right at the T20 tournament.

    England endured a dismal defence of their ODI title in India last year, failing to make it out of the group stage as they lost six of their nine matches.

    They are desperate for a better showing as they look to retain their 20-over crown at the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies, with their opener coming against Scotland on June 4.

    Before then, Buttler's team face Pakistan in a four-match home T20I series, and he has witnessed a determination to respond within the camp.  

    "That pride was obviously dented and it was a really disappointing competition," Buttler recalled.

    "But life moves on, it's a chapter in the book and there's lessons you learn but we're presented with a new opportunity, a different format.

    "We go to the West Indies and want to give a better account of ourselves."

    Headingley is the venue for England's first match against Pakistan on Wednesday, when Jofra Archer could make his first international appearance for over a year.

    The fast bowler has missed the better part of two years with elbow and back issues, but Buttler says he has impressed in training this week.

    "He's bowling quick," Buttler said of Archer. "It was good fun facing him in the nets yesterday, a really good challenge. It's great to see him back."

    Shaheen Afridi lauded Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan as "world class" after the pair guided Pakistan to a T20I series victory over Ireland on Tuesday.

    Babar's side were defeated in the first meeting with Ireland last week but responded with two convincing chases to secure a 2-1 triumph.

    Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker's 73 helped his side to set a target of 179 in the winner-takes-all-decider, but Pakistan had little trouble in easing to a six-wicket victory with 18 balls to spare.

    Rizwan, who managed an unbeaten 75 in the second meeting, crafted a well-made 56, while Babar carried Pakistan to within touching distance after his 42-ball 75.

    Big-hitter Azam Khan blasted 18 off just six deliveries to see the visitors over the line, though Afridi was quick to credit the work of the two experienced Pakistan campaigners.

    "For us, before the World Cup, it's important to have these games to ready ourselves and there are a few areas to improve," said Afridi, who impressed with 3-14 in the first innings. 

    "They're both world-class players [Babar and Rizwan]; they know how to play their role and they have done really well on this pitch."

    Babar bludgeoned four of his five sixes off Ben White's bowling in the 14th over, while sharing 139 runs with the in-form Rizwan for the second wicket.

    "We had good communication in the middle because we have played a lot of cricket together; we were trying to play on our strengths and the aim was to match with the run rate," Babar added.

    "Lots of positives for us to take and we were able to execute our plans.

    "We have a big tournament coming up and this is good practice; we are now looking forward to the England series."

    Mark Adair was the only Ireland bowler to impress with his economical 3-28, though Tucker was still satisfied with his side's efforts.

    "It was brilliant and a great privilege to captain," Tucker said at the post-match presentation. "It would have been nice to start with a win.

    "We set up a platform nicely but unfortunately, we couldn't finish well. We gave everyone a go with the ball. Credit to the lads, they bowled well in tough conditions.

    "Maybe it was a bit disappointing with the result but we had positives from the series."

    This groundbreaking initiative will be searching for the next sports presenting super star from within the region with training on offer for the winning participant so that they can hone their talent and use this amazing opportunity as a springboard to a career in broadcasting. This is one of the many CPL initiatives that look to develop the next generation of Caribbean talent, but this is the first time that the focus will be on the CPL broadcast which was watched by 853.5million viewers in 2023.

    Those wanting to submit a performance into the contest can do so by sharing them in front of the camera presenting or interviewing someone on social media with the hashtag #CPLTALENTSEARCH.

     Paul Pritchett-Brown, CPL’s Head of Production, said: “We are really looking forward to seeing the submissions from the next generation of broadcasting talent from across the region. This is an amazing opportunity to showcase your skills in front of the camera and we are hopeful that we will get a lot of submissions as we search for the next on screen talent.”
