Matt Derbyshire scored the only goal as Macarthur got back to winning ways in the A-League by beating 10-man Sydney FC 1-0.

Derbyshire netted what proved to be the winner in the 36th minute, but his simple tap-in owed much to the great work of Markel Susaeta down the left byline.

Two minutes later Sydney were reduced to 10 when Paulo Retre was shown a red card for a high challenge.

Macarthur could not add to their advantage but still made it three wins out of four following a 4-1 loss to Western United last time out.

They sit second in their inaugural season in the A-League, trailing Central Coast Mariners - who have a game in hand - by a point.

In the day's other game, goals from David Ball and Ben Waine gave Wellington Phoenix only their second win of the campaign, a 2-0 defeat of Newcastle Jets.

Victor Sanchez scored a late winner as Western United came out on top in a seven-goal thriller with Melbourne Victory, while Adelaide United held off Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday.

Marvel Stadium was the stage for an A-League drama in the late kick-off, with Western United rallying from 1-0 down to lead 3-1 – only to then have a man sent off as Melbourne fought back to draw level.

Callum McManaman opened the scoring for the home team but Sanchez's first of the contest, plus a brace from Besart Berisha, put Western United in command.

However, they were reduced to 10 men when Tomislav Uskok saw yellow for a second time. Jacob Butterfield closed the gap just after the hour mark and Rudy Gestede made it 3-3 in the 82nd minute, heading in a cross from Dalibor Markovic.

Melbourne at that stage appeared favourites to get a winner, yet Sanchez was the hero when his left-footed shot found the net deep into added time.

Western United have now won four of the five meetings with Victory and are the only opponents in the competition's history to be unbeaten against them.

Earlier on, Adelaide put an end to a three-game losing streak against Western Sydney, Craig Goodwin – who has rejoined the club on loan from Al-Wehda – opening the scoring inside two minutes before captain Stefan Mauk doubled the advantage just prior to half-time.

Substitute Bruce Kamau pulled a goal for Western Sydney, but a first loss in eight league matches was confirmed when Mohamed Toure made it 3-1 in the 82nd minute.

While Mitchell Duke struck late for the hosts, it turned out to be no more than a consolation effort.

The result sees Adelaide join their opponents on 13 points in the table, with Western Sydney missing out on the chance to move up to second place.

Diego Castro was the Perth Glory hero as his double secured a 3-1 home A-League victory over second-placed Brisbane Roar.

Perth have won three straight matches, after captain Castro netted either side of a fine Bruno Fornaroli volley.

Jack Hingert headed in on the stroke of half-time to ensure the match was level at the interval, but Brisbane fell to defeat despite racking up 20 attempts on goal.

On his A-League debut, Perth substitute Kosuke Ota had a hand in creating the second-half goals from Fornaroli and Castro for the free-scoring hosts, who have now netted 18 times across their first six games, an A-League record.

Glory have three games in hand on most of the teams above them and are up to fifth in the table, two points behind Brisbane and six adrift of leaders Central Coast Mariners.

It is now four matches without a win for Brisbane, who hit the woodwork twice and saw impressive performances from Corey Brown and Jay O'Shea – who combined for 10 chances created – go unrewarded.

Rudy Gestede struck a goal in each half as Melbourne Victory beat Wellington Phoenix 2-0 in a battle of the A-League's bottom two.

Victory climbed off the foot of the table, leapfrogging their visitors courtesy of Gestede's double at AAMI Park.

Jake Brimmer provided the ammunition for both as the hosts ended a three-game losing streak in a fixture that saw seven yellow cards.

Grant Brebner's side took the lead deep into first-half stoppage time when former Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa forward Gestede met Brimmer's right-wing corner with a firm header.

The same combination led to the hosts' second, Brimmer sending over a corner which Gestede nodded in after 49 minutes.

Despite 18 attempts, Wellington could only hit the target once as their run without a win at this stadium was extended to 11 games.

Melbourne City held off a late comeback attempt from Sydney FC to win 3-2 and end a three-match A-League losing streak.

Hosts City came into the contest – a rematch of last year's Grand Final, which Sydney won in extra time – out of form with five defeats in their last six.

But any lack of confidence was not reflected as they stormed into a three-goal lead after 53 minutes courtesy of two goals from Australia striker Jamie Maclaren and another from Adrian Luna.

Milos Ninkovic got one back and another Sydney substitute, Patrick Wood, scored in the 90th minute to prompt a few nerves in stoppage time but Melbourne held on.

Maclaren was constantly involved, racking up nine shots for the victors, while Andrew Nabbout had a game-high five key passes including a fine assist for the third goal.

A first loss in four means Sydney stay fifth, with City now just two points behind them in ninth.

Wellington Phoenix moved off the bottom of the A-League table after playing out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday.

A three-goal blitz in eight second-half minutes saw the visitors come from behind to lead only to end up sharing the spoils at WIN Stadium.

Mirza Muratovic scored at the second attempt nine minutes in and Phoenix held the advantage until 19 minutes from time, when Kwame Yeboah headed in a Keanu Baccus cross.

Bruce Kamau turned in Daniel Wilmering's delivery just five minutes later only for Louis Fenton to head in a quick-fire equaliser.

The Wanderers stretched their unbeaten league run to seven games, their longest since a 10-match streak that ended in January 2016, but they missed out on the chance to go above Macarthur FC into third.

Phoenix are off the bottom, a point ahead of Melbourne Victory, who were beaten 1-0 at home by Newcastle Jets in Sunday's earlier game.

Grant Brebner's men were punished for a lack of precision in attack, with just one of their 13 shots hitting the target against a side who had lost four consecutive A-League games at AAMI Park by an aggregate score of 10-2.

Angus Thurgate struck the winner after 72 minutes as Newcastle made it four wins from their previous eight away matches to move into the top six.

Besart Berisha moved to second on the Australian National League all-time scoring list as Western United routed Macarthur 4-1 in the A-League on Saturday.

The 35-year-old scored twice to rack up his 137th and 138th A-League goals - a competition best - and jump ahead of former NSL striker Rod Brown in the overall list in Australian league football.

Iker Guarrotxena opened the scoring in fine fashion at Mars Stadium, shrugging off compatriot Benat and firing low past Adam Federici.

The Spaniard played a part in the second, releasing Alessandro Diamanti to tee up Berisha, and the Italian set up the counter-attack for Dylan Pierias to make it 3-0.

Guarrotxena was unfortunate to see his lob come back off the crossbar but Berisha was on hand to score the follow up that completed the rout, and the only blot was Matt Derbyshire's late consolation. United move up to eighth, with Macarthur still high in third despite the setback.

In Saturday's other game, Sydney FC and second-place Brisbane Roar played out a goalless draw.

Tomi Juric scored a hat-trick of penalties as Adelaide United secured a thrilling 3-2 win over A-League leaders Central Coast Mariners.

In an action-packed contest at Coopers Stadium on Friday, the visitors were undone by a combination of poor discipline and a couple of borderline VAR calls.

The Mariners led with 20 minutes remaining but succumbed to two late spot-kicks, as Juric added to his first-half penalty to end Adelaide's run of three straight losses.

Daniel De Silva gave the Mariners a 15th-minute lead with a scruffy finish inside the box, but the scores were level at the break after Ruon Tongyik was deemed to have fouled Stefan Mauk, with Juric converting from 12 yards after VAR upheld the decision.

Alou Kuol restored the advantage for Alen Stajcic's side, his powerful strike finding its way in off the post, but the lead was short-lived.

Mauk was the one to go down again, with substitute Joshua Nisbet the guilty party, and Juric kept his nerve to beat Mark Birighitti.

Incredibly, the hosts were awarded a third penalty with five minutes left – VAR having spotted a handball by Kye Rowles – and Juric proved deadly once more.

Rowles then saw red deep into stoppage time after remonstrating with the referee as the Mariners missed the chance to go seven points clear at the top.

Central Coast Mariners extended their lead at the top of the A-League thanks to a 2-0 win at 10-man Wellington Phoenix.

The hosts operated with reduced numbers for more than an hour of the contest after David Ball was given a deserved straight red card for a reckless lunge on Matt Simon.

Simon recovered well enough to give Central Coast the lead five minutes before half-time, clipping home Marco Urena's excellent throughball.

The goalscorer heaped praise on the experienced Costa Rica playmaker afterwards.

"You can see Marco's quality out on the pitch and that pass was just another showing from him of how good he is," Simon said.

"And he's only going to get better.  I think he's still got a little bit to go to get 100 per cent fit but I think he's shown his qualities so far."

Oliver Bozanic made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after another misguided Phoenix challenge - this time from Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi on Daniel De Silva - and there was little doubt from that point that the Mariners would open up a four-point gap over second-placed Macarthur.

Brisbane Roar had the chance to leapfrog the Sydney club but were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle Jets.

The Jets are seventh with two wins from eight games so far, with Valentino Yuel close to a being a topical matchwinner on Sunday when his 25-yard drive boomed back off the post.

Wellington are only kept off the bottom by Melbourne Victory on goal difference, although they have only played six times.

Matt Derbyshire showed a poacher's instinct as he grabbed a second-half hat-trick in Macarthur's 4-0 win over Adelaide United.

The former Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest striker sent Macarthur second in the A-League, with Mark Milligan also on target at Campbelltown Stadium.

In driving rain, Derbyshire swooped low as a corner from the left was helped on to the back post, heading Macarthur ahead from no more than a couple of yards in the 66th minute.

He then took advantage of Tommy Oar's low cross from the left that skidded across the wet surface to slide in the second goal seven minutes later.

Milligan weighed in with a third for the hosts after clever link-up play saw Derbyshire slip the captain behind the Adelaide defence to caress the ball into the bottom left corner.

Derbyshire still had unfinished business and he struck from inside the six-yard box for the third time in the game in the 90th minute, the close-range header from another left-wing cross by Oar sealing his night's work.

Western Sydney Wanderers triumphed 2-0 over struggling Melbourne Victory on Wednesday to record their first home win of the A-League season.

A tight contest was cracked open when Melbourne substitute Rudy Gestede caught Bernie Ibini with a high challenge inside the penalty area.

Wanderers captain Graham Dorrans converted from the spot to put the hosts ahead in the 72nd minute, though they were made to wait for a second that would wrap up the victory.

Ibini was involved again when it eventually arrived, carrying the ball from deep to set up substitute Kwame Yeboah to fire beyond Max Crocombe and secure his side all three points at Bankwest Stadium.

The result lifts Western Sydney up to third in the standings, level on points with second place Brisbane Roar - who have played a game less - and three behind table-topping Central Coast Mariners.

Melbourne, meanwhile, remain stuck at the bottom having won just once in six outings. Another failure to score on the road means they have managed only two away goals this term, the lowest number by any team in the competition.

Brisbane Roar missed out on regaining top spot in the A-League as their four-game winning streak was brought to an end with a 2-0 loss against Macarthur at the Dolphin Stadium.

Warren Moon's side, leapfrogged at the summit by Central Coast Mariners at the weekend, were seeking a club-record equalling fifth consecutive victory in the league.

But Macarthur took all three points on their first interstate trip thanks to goals from Denis Genreau and substitute Matt Derbyshire's superb long-range strike in the final 14 minutes of the game.

The contest opened up in the second half and Genreau made the breakthrough with an excellent first-time finish away from Jamie Young to get off the mark with his first A-League goal.

The Roar had earlier hit the post through Dylan Wenzel-Halls but struggled to carve out chances and conceded a second late on through Derbyshire, who spotted Young off his line and found the net from 50 yards to seal a huge win for third-place Macarthur.

Kosta Barbarouses ended his A-League goal drought to give Sydney FC a 2-1 victory over his old club Wellington Phoenix at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.

The 30-year-old, who started his career in Australia's top flight with the Phoenix in 2007, had gone more than a year without a goal from open play.

He struck twice on Monday for the champions, though, becoming just the sixth player to reach 70 A-League goals in the competition's history.

Barbarouses opened the scoring against the run of play with a fine finish 32 minutes in and fired home a second midway through the second half.

The visitors, who hit the crossbar twice through Ulises Davila and Louis Fenton and out-shot Sydney 20 to seven, could only manage an injury-time consolation through Davila's deflected effort.

They stayed second-bottom with four points from five matches, while Sydney climbed to third, five behind leaders Central Coast Mariners but with two games in hand.

Alou Kuol's late brace secured a dramatic turnaround that lifted Central Coast Mariners back to the A-League summit with a 3-2 win over Western United in Gosford.

United took a 2-1 lead in the break thanks to goals from Tomislav Uskok and Besart Berisha, either side of Matt Simon's 16th-minute equaliser in an entertaining first half.

For a while that deficit remained intact and United appeared to be closing in on only a second win of the season.

But Kuol was introduced from the bench with an hour played and he made a fine impact, first equalising in the 77th minute as he turned in Daniel De Silva's corner, before then getting the winner soon after with a diving header.

There was no such delight for Melbourne City, however, rather despair as last season's grand finalists suffered a third successive A-League loss, this time to Newcastle Jets.

The only goal of the game arrived just before half-time, when Valentino Yuel converted from close range for his fourth goal in five games.

Brisbane Roar moved back to the top of the A-League after thrashing Melbourne Victory 5-2 on Saturday at Dolphin Stadium.

Six of the seven goals came in a thrilling first half, with the visitors finding themselves 3-0 down inside 17 minutes.

Dylan Wenzel-Halls' fifth goal in four games got Brisbane away to a strong start before a fine strike from Scott McDonald and a close-range finish from Riku Danzaki came in the space of three minutes.

Luis Lawrie-Lattanzio seized a lifeline when he turned in Adama Traore's cross, but McDonald headed his second from a Corey Brown corner to make it 4-1.

Jake Brimmer reduced the deficit with a free-kick deep into first-half injury time, but Danzaki struck again four minutes after the restart as Roar went top, above Central Coast Mariners on goal difference.

In the later game at Campbelltown Stadium, Western Sydney Wanderers twice came from a goal down to secure a 2-2 draw with Macarthur.

Graham Dorrans cancelled out Aleksandar Jovanovic's opener and, after Aleksandar Susnjar had restored the hosts' lead, Simon Cox nodded in a second equaliser following a stunning scorpion-kick-style assist from Keanu Baccus.

The result keeps the Wanderers fourth, a point above Ante Milicic's side.
