Sebastien Haller has his sights set on a comeback after training with Borussia Dortmund for the first time since undergoing treatment for testicular cancer.

The Ivory Coast striker joined Dortmund from Ajax ahead of this season, but he is yet to feature for the Bundesliga giants after discovering a malignant tumour during pre-season testing in July.

Haller subsequently underwent two surgeries and chemotherapy, with Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke professing his hope the striker could return after the mid-season break.

Dortmund returned to training for the first time after the World Cup on Monday, and an update on the club's website revealed Haller was present as the squad underwent fitness testing, though he will be "carefully introduced".

Haller later posted on Twitter to outline his hopes for 2023, writing: "Happy New Year everyone! It starts very well for me because it is synonymous with returning to the field! 2022 was not the easiest year, but it prepared me to take up all the new challenges that 2023 will offer me.

Jurgen Klopp hopes people "stay calm" over Darwin Nunez's mixed start at Liverpool and pointed to former player Robert Lewandowski as a reason to remain confident.

Nunez joined Liverpool in June for a fee that could eventually reach a club-record £85million, but the Uruguay international has endured an inconsistent opening to his career with the Reds.

Liverpool picked up a third consecutive league win at Aston Villa on Monday, though Nunez failed to convert any of his four big chances despite registering 1.15 xG (expected goals).

The striker came in for criticism after the game for his finishing, but Klopp urged people to remain behind the 23-year-old, and cited Lewandowski's poor start at Borussia Dortmund as an example of how players can improve.

After signing for Klopp's Dortmund side from Lech Poznan before the 2010-11 campaign, Lewandowski netted just eight times in 38 Bundesliga matches.

However, he went on to register 102 goals in 184 games under Klopp, helping them to two Bundesliga titles and the 2012-13 Champions League final before leaving for Bayern Munich in 2014.

Klopp believes Liverpool fans should keep the faith in Nunez, in the hopes that he will flourish as Lewandowski did.

"If you could just rewind to that time, [I was] sitting in press conferences and journalists really, when I started playing Lewandowski, they asked me 'why is [Lucas] Barrios not playing?'," Klopp told reporters.

"Lucas Barrios had scored 16 goals that season and was the number nine in our team, so Lewy started playing in different positions to adapt to different things, didn't like it too much. 

"The Polish journalists were not too friendly with me because he didn't play at nine, he played in a 4-2-3-1 as a 10, I thought at the time it made absolute sense to develop his game… there's a lot of similarities [with Nunez] to be honest.

"Lewy would tell the same story, we had shooting sessions where he didn't finish off one.

"We had bets all the time for 10 euros, if you score more than 10 times I pay you, if you don't you pay me, my pocket was full of money.

"It's all about staying calm, when you see the potential, stay calm. It's so difficult in the world we are living in.

"I think we all agree that the potential [of Nunez] is so obvious.

"It's not only with Lewy I had this but he is an obvious comparison, I understand that. It's just about staying calm, and I am super calm, and the team is as well by the way."

While Klopp conceded Nunez should have done better with one chance in particular against Villa, he also feels the media scrutiny has been over the top.

"Is everything right? No," he said. "I think it's clear with the big chance in the second half, if he can run a little bit at an angle then he has a free choice.

"But it's all coming. So you do it like this, the next time you do it like that.

"It's so difficult in the world we are living in. I don't want to make it personal now but because of you [the media] asking and making a big fuss of everything, then of course the supporters and social media [get carried away].

"All these kind of things, the more you can shut off that, the better it is."

Manchester United offered double the nearest offer for Jude Bellingham when he was at Birmingham City, only to still miss out on the midfielder.

The teenager left the West Midlands outfit to join Borussia Dortmund in 2020, and has enjoyed a meteoric rise since, earning both the captaincy of the Bundesliga club and full England honours.

After a series of strong World Cup performances, Bellingham is now tipped to head to a major European rival next year, with Liverpool and Real Madrid both linked with his signature.

But former Birmingham chief Xuandong Ren has revealed United previously made an aggressive pursuit of the 19-year-old when he was in the English lower leagues, ultimately coming up short with a package to persuade their target.

"[Former managing director] Ed Woodward was the one who was most insistent," he told Mundo Deportivo. "We sat down and talked about how we could convince Bellingham.

"Manchester United offered twice as much as the rest of the clubs [chasing him]. They even brought him together with [former manager Alex] Ferguson, [Eric] Cantona and [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer.

"But Jude did not make any decision based on money. They were offering much more salary compared to the rest, maybe double. He was going to be guaranteed millions in the bank and he didn't take it.

"That's not normal for a player. It was a difficult position, because I wanted to respect his decision. Our promise was that we would let him make the decision because of the loyalty he showed us."

The power dynamic at Paris Saint-Germain is a curious watch, with Lionel Messi set to formalise an agreement to remain for another season.

Kylian Mbappe re-signed with the French champions in May until 2025 but has still been linked with moves away from the club.

Messi came out on top over Mbappe in the World Cup final earlier this month, and Barcelona believe an opportunity might arise.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is hopeful Jude Bellingham will not come under too much pressure following his "absolutely exceptional" showing for England at the World Cup.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder has been strongly linked with a move to a number of Europe's elite clubs – Liverpool among them – on the back of another impressive year.

Bellingham started all five of England's matches at Qatar 2022, which ended in quarter-final defeat to France, scoring and assisting one goal from central midfield.

He was reportedly valued in excess of €100million (£88.5m) by Dortmund prior to the World Cup, a valuation that is likely to have only risen since.

However, Klopp says that no matter how expensive the 19-year-old is, he should not be weighed down by growing expectations in his home country.

"I don't like to talk always about money," Klopp told reporters. "When you talk about a player like Jude, I think everybody agrees he's just exceptional for the age group. 

"Imagine somebody has no clue about football or whatever or knows about football but didn't watch it for a while and has no clue on Jude Bellingham...  

"'How old do you think he is?' I think nobody would get it. Or even get close to his age. It's like 28, 29, whatever, these kind of things, because he plays that maturely. 

"He played an exceptional World Cup, absolutely exceptional. And he's so good in so many things and has to improve and other things.

"But to describe him I'd say the things he can do already are difficult to learn. The things he has to improve are easy to learn and to improve so that makes a really good player. 

"What can I say? I don’t say anything new. I thought that already, since two or three years ago, since he had his breakthrough at Dortmund, everybody knows that already.

"But I have no idea what that means for the money side of it. I really think if we all if want to do him a favour, then we just don't talk too much about money. 

"And I mean, from an English point of view, don't throw any hurdles in his development. That would be really cool, wherever he will end up."

Bellingham (19 years, 145 days) is the third-youngest player to start for England at a World Cup after Michael Owen in 1998 (18y, 198d) and Luke Shaw in 2014 (18y, 347d).

The Birmingham City academy product became the second-youngest player to score for England in the competition behind only Owen with his goal against Iran.

The teenage midfielder will remain in high demand ahead of the January transfer window, which Liverpool will target as a chance to strengthen their squad.

Liverpool are sixth in the Premier League and face a challenge to qualify for the Champions League, which Klopp accepts that could impact what players his side try to sign.

"It's very important, very important," he said of finishing in the top four. "That's obviously our main target. I'm surprised that you don't ask me today 'can you be champions?' 

"I think we have a good chance to qualify for the Champions League. If it will happen this year, I don't know. But we're 100 per cent one of the contenders for the next few years. 

"If you ask a player and he's like, 'yeah, but next year you're not sure if you're in the Champions League; I'd prefer to go to a club who play in it now, but maybe not next year'. 

"I'm not sure I would want this player still to be honest. So it's like I understand it 100 per cent. I want to be part of the Champions League, to be honest, all the time.

"For now, we have pathways still to qualify for the Champions League next year. As long as that's the case, I see ourselves as a proper contender for qualification."

Youssoufa Moukoko is "shocked" by reports suggesting he is stalling on signing a new contract with Borussia Dortmund amid interest from a host of Europe's elite clubs.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are all reportedly interested in the 18-year-old, who is also said to be a target for Barcelona after impressing in the early stages of his Bundesliga career.

The forward has made 59 appearances for Dortmund, but his future appears uncertain after his agent Patrick Williams suggested he was not close to agreeing a new contract with the club.

A report from German newspaper BILD claimed Moukoko was waiting for a more lucrative offer from his current employers, but he has refuted those suggestions with a strongly worded response on Instagram.

"Please don't believe everything that's been written in the papers. I won't let myself be pressured into a decision about my future," the teenager wrote before deleting the post on Friday. 

"I will never accept such a lie about me. My full focus is on the second half of the season with Borussia Dortmund.

"No player is bigger than the club and I will never be bigger than the club, just a small part of it.

"It's really sad that something like that is invented just to paint you fans a wrong picture about me. I am really shocked by this story."

Moukoko has been at Dortmund since he was 12 and became the youngest player in Champions League history when making his competition debut one day after his 16th birthday.

He then became the youngest Germany player to make a World Cup appearance in their shock defeat to Japan in November (aged 18 years, three days).

In that same game, Moukoko also became the youngest player to make a World Cup appearance overall since Nigeria's Femi Opabunmi against England in 2002 (17 years, 101 days).

Moukoko and Dortmund are currently enjoying an extended mid-season break following the conclusion of the World Cup, with BVB returning to Bundesliga action against Augsburg on January 22.

Benfica will reportedly hold out for Enzo Fernandez's full €120million release clause just six months after signing him for €10million from River Plate.

Fernandez, 21, has become one of the hottest names in football since arriving at Benfica, helping his side to an undefeated group stage in the Champions League before earning his place in Argentina's World Cup squad.

After starting the group stage on the bench, Fernandez worked his way into the starting XI for the final group match against Poland, before playing every minute of Argentina's run through the knockout stages.

His rapid rise saw Fernandez become a target of both Real Madrid and Liverpool, and despite earlier reports that he would be available for €100m, the Portuguese club will now seemingly not settle for anything less than his release clause.

Meanwhile, Madrid appear to be looking elsewhere, with a fresh report from AS stating they are in the driver's seat in the chase for Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham, and that they view 24-year-old Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli as a reliable back-up plan if they land neither Fernandez or Bellingham.

Martinez, 30, had an interesting journeyman career before arriving with Villa in 2020, having been contracted to Arsenal, but loaned out to Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolves, Getafe and Reading.

In his first two seasons with Villa, Martinez kept 26 Premier League clean sheets, earning his Argentina debut in June 2021.

His ascension to La Albiceleste's number one saw him earn the 2021 Copa America Golden Glove as the tournament's best goalkeeper, and he followed it up with another Golden Glove after securing the World Cup title in a penalty shoot-out.

Neuer's leg fracture leaves Bayern without their first-choice goalkeeper, and with only a four-point gap atop the Bundesliga, they are reportedly desperate to secure a replacement in January.

Rumoured Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona target Youssoufa Moukoko is not close to agreeing a new deal with Borussia Dortmund, his agent has said.

Germany international Moukoko is out of contract with Dortmund at the end of the season and continues to be linked with a number of heavyweight clubs.

Reports from Germany earlier this week suggested the 18-year-old was ready to commit his future to the Bundesliga side, for whom he has made 59 appearances.

While talks with Dortmund remain ongoing, however, Moukoko's agent Patrick Williams has revealed there is still some way to go in an apparent boost to interested suitors.

"I can confirm we are not yet about to conclude a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund," Williams told Sky Sport.

"I can also assure you the numbers that are circulating are simply not correct and Youssoufa was never offered that much. 

"But we are still in contact with Dortmund and will see what the next few days bring.

"A player like Youssoufa is interesting for all top clubs in the world. Especially when he is free and has a future in the German national team."

Moukoko has been with Dortmund since he was 12 and broke the record as the youngest player in Champions League history when making his debut a day after turning 16.

Interest in Moukoko has only increased after he became the youngest Germany player to make a World Cup appearance in their shock defeat to Japan (18 years, three days).

Moukoko also became the youngest player to make a World Cup appearance overall since Nigeria's Femi Opabunmi against England in 2002 (17 years, 101 days).

Asked about his future with Dortmund last month, the academy product said: "I feel very comfortable at the club. I know the environment, my friends are there. 

"I love the club and the fans love me, I hope. Not everyone can say that about themselves. I would really like to stay in Dortmund, I have everything there."

Vlahovic is also believed to be available due to Juventus' behind-the-scenes turmoil, while Abraham has a €75m buy-back option, but that price is said to be above what Chelsea are willing to pay for him.

The 23-year-old arrived at the club in August last year and, despite making 29 LaLiga appearances, he was only awarded eight starts, scoring six goals and contributing six assists for the campaign.

This season has been more of the same for the Brazilian international, being subbed on in 15 games across all club competitions, while making just two starts. He is yet to score this season.
