Barcelona sporting director Ramon Planes denied the LaLiga giants have held talks with Manchester United regarding Ousmane Dembele.

Dembele has emerged as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho United, who are desperate to bolster their squad before the transfer window shuts.

United have been linked with a loan deal, while Red Devils star Paul Pogba has reportedly tried to convince his France team-mate to move to Old Trafford.

However, Barca's Planes dismissed the transfer speculation on Friday.

"First of all, no negotiations with Man United at the moment, completely deny that," said Planes.

"He's a player we count on, we know his potential. We hope this year the team sees the best of him."

Dembele was an unused substitute in 10-man Barca's 3-0 LaLiga victory at Celta on Thursday.

While there is uncertainty over Dembele, Barca continue to be linked with Lyon star Memphis Depay as head coach Ronald Koeman looks to strengthen his attack following the departure of Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid.

Barca have opened their 2020-21 LaLiga season with back-to-back wins but Planes added: "We have a good squad, who have competed very well.

"There are always teams to reinforce. We are working with the coach. Daily communication.

"On an attacking level there is great potential and, defensively, it is true that it is weaker.

"We will work until the last day to bring the best and, if someone comes, who can be good. We will not sign for the sake of signing someone. Soon there will be another market."

Ronald Koeman said Pedri and Francisco Trincao are more decisive than Ousmane Dembele as the Barcelona head coach explained the rumoured Manchester United target's place on the bench against Celta Vigo.

Dembele – linked with Premier League giants United – was an unused substitute in 10-man Barca's 3-0 LaLiga victory at Celta on Thursday.

The France international has emerged as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho, with United reportedly eyeing a loan deal before the transfer window closes.

Asked about Dembele's absence, Dutchman Koeman cited tactical reasons post-match.

"If I think about not choosing a player, you have to think about the game," Koeman told reporters.

"We went ahead with the opening goal and we had players on the bench in Pedri and Trincao who can bring more than Dembele can, to be decisive, to make changes in that sense."

Ansu Fati made it three goals in two games, while a Lucas Olaza own goal and Sergi Roberto's stoppage-time strike ensured Barca defeated Celta.

Barca were already one goal ahead via Fati's 11th-minute opener when defender Clement Lenglet was sent off for a second bookable offence three minutes before half-time.

The LaLiga powerhouse secured back-to-back wins to start the season after Celta defender Olaza turned the ball into his own net and Roberto added a third goal at the death.

Koeman, who replaced Quique Setien following a tumultuous season which saw Barca dethroned by Real Madrid in LaLiga and humiliated 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, added: "I can only speak about this season, I can't say about what happened last season. What I've seen since my first day is that these players are hungry.

"They're not willing to give in after a season like that. They're working a lot, these players are training hard with more intensity. I think it's important, the way that we're training and that's been shown today until the last second with one player down away from home. I think you can notice it in all the details across the pitch.

"I think like any coach you need time, but I think the team are much better than everyone would have thought before. There have been some difficult games and we have six points.

"We've scored seven goals and haven't conceded one. I think those statistics show we're growing and of course there are always things to improve on. But we've worked really hard for these matches and I'm really happy."

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has confirmed Sergino Dest is having a medical with the club ahead of a potential move from Ajax.

The 19-year-old United States international has been strongly linked with a €25million move to either Barca or Bayern Munich, but it appears the Catalan club have won the race.

Dest, an attack-minded right-back, was spotted arriving in Barcelona on Tuesday, giving rise to increased speculation that the deal was practically closed.

And Koeman, who tried to persuade Dest to represent the Netherlands when he coached the Oranje, confirmed the teenager is having a medical as he plans to take the well-trodden path from Ajax to Camp Nou.

"Dest is doing his medical, we still have to sign [the contracts]," Koeman told reporters in his news conference on Wednesday. "Until he signs I will not comment

"We are going to have a young full-back – it is a matter of changing things and having young players for the future of the club is important.

"It is good because he has played in the Champions League and I am sure that, when all the contracts are signed, he will be very useful for Barca."

One player strongly linked with leaving Barca is Ousmane Dembele, who is reportedly being lined up by Manchester United as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.

The French winger has only been able to show glimpses of his ability since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 due to injuries – in 2019-20 he featured just five times in LaLiga.

While Koeman claimed no knowledge of any potential transfer for Dembele, he insisted that he sees a future for him at Barca.

"Those decisions are made by the club and the player. As we have seen, I am going to count on him," Koeman added.

"He did not play from the start [against Villarreal] because there are more players and Ansu [Fati] has proven to be very good for this team.

"He was better physically the first few weeks, but today he trained well and I'm going to count on him."

Dembele's future could be tied to that of Memphis Depay, who is said to be Barca's primary target in attack, and while Koeman would not specifically name his compatriot when asked about signings, he made no secret of his desire to add options in that department.

"We have to analyse the squad, analyse what we lack," he continued. "We know that financially the club has its problems, like everyone else.

"There are one or two positions where we need to improve, and I'm not going to lie to you, we are working.

"There are options but it is very unsafe. The club is going to work hard. If not, we will use our players because I have no complaints with the ones we have.

"We want to have two or three players per position. We have put Leo [Lionel Messi] as a nine, [Antoine] Griezmann can play there, but they are different players. Martin [Braithwaite] is more than a nine and will have his chances but we want one more."

Ousmane Dembele has been linked with a move to Manchester United before the transfer window closes.

Dembele is seen as an alternative to Jadon Sancho, who remains at Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund.

But Dembele is reportedly against leaving Camp Nou.

Winger Dembele has been out since November after rupturing his thigh muscle but is in line for a long-awaited return in Lisbon on Friday.

Setien told a pre-match news conference: "We have arrived in good spirits. This is the game we are waiting for. We have prepared well.

"It is a satisfaction for all of us that Dembele is in the squad and I think he will be in a position to participate for a few minutes if we consider it appropriate.

"We are excited that he can play and get it right."

Bayern look well placed to go all the way in the competition, having romped to a domestic double in Germany and swept Chelsea aside in their previous European tie.

Barca, on the other hand, lost their LaLiga title to rivals Real Madrid and have struggled to convince in recent months.

But Setien remains positive of their chances, saying: "Of course, we are convinced we can go through.

"We know the potential of the opponent, their numbers and their capacity, with extraordinary potential, but we have that, too.

"I think it will be an even game. We have a lot to say in this game."

The coach is keen to ensure Lionel Messi is not left to do the job alone, however, even if he is highly likely to play a key role.

"Leo can help win the game, obviously, but I have always believed in the strength of the team," Setien said.

"We will have to assist Leo because both Messi, like any other outstanding player, is weaker without the strength of the team."

Rennes sensation Eduardo Camavinga is also wanted next year, while Dortmund forward Erling Haaland is a 2022 target.

Barcelona returned to training on Tuesday ahead of the resumption of the Champions League, with Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann on duty.

The French duo have both been sidelined with injuries but underwent individual recovery work as they continued their rehabilitation.

Griezmann suffered a thigh problem in the 1-0 win over Real Valladolid on July 11, forcing him to miss the final two LaLiga games as Barca were dethroned by Real Madrid during the run-in.

As for Dembele, his season was seemingly over when he underwent surgery to repair his damaged hamstring back in February.

However, the extension of the 2019-20 campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic has raised the possibility of the winger featuring in Europe.

Meanwhile, defender Clement Lenglet also worked away from the rest of the group, the centre-back attempting to overcome a groin injury suffered on the last day of the league campaign.

Barcelona boss Quique Setien does not expect the injured Frenkie de Jong to miss the remainder of the LaLiga season.

Midfielder De Jong has a calf injury and will not be involved when the Catalans host Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday.

There have been suggestions the Netherlands international is likely to miss the rest of the league season, as Barca attempt to defend their title from Real Madrid over the final eight matches.

Setien, though, expects De Jong to recover sooner rather than later.

When asked if De Jong could miss the rest of 2019-20, he told reporters on Monday: "We hope that won't be the case. He has a small injury in the area of his calf and we'll see how he progresses. But I'm sure he'll be able to play a few games.

"He's a complete player because he gives us a lot of things when we have the ball, but he's also physical and covers a lot of space. He's young, he has dynamism, enthusiasm and quality. He's learning many things we've been trying to improve.

"It's true that he's an important loss and he could help us a lot. We're a little upset that he's not there, but these are things you have to adapt to. I still have confidence in the people who are going to play in his position."

Barca, who will also be without Sergi Roberto against Athletic, lost their place at the top of the table on Sunday as Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 2-1 to take advantage of the champions' draw with Sevilla.

Although they are behind Madrid by virtue of their head-to-head record this season, meaning the title race is no longer in their hands, Setien says his Barca players have trained positively in recent days.

"We've trained very well. There's a bit of residual fatigue but we're going to try to keep up the excitement and expectations because we're convinced we can win the title and we're going to try to improve the footballing aspects we have to control," he said.

Setien included Jorge Cuenca and Dani Morer from the B team in his 24-man squad, but he does not necessarily expect either to play.

However, he says Samuel Umtiti has a chance of forcing his way back into the first-team picture after returning from suspension.

"As they gave us the option of taking 23 players, it's difficult for Cuenca to play, but we can't include players who haven't passed the [COVID-19] tests," he said.

"We'll see tomorrow because one of the two [Cuenca and Morer] will be left out. But they train with us every day and they're here.

"If we decided he [Umtiti] has to play, he would play. He's getting better and better and this is strictly a subject for me. These are football issues.

"It's true he's better but he was injured for a while and he hasn't been at the level of others. He's much better now and has his chances to play, like everyone else."

Setien added that Ousmane Dembele is progressing well in his recovery from a thigh injury but that his return to group training "will have to wait".
