Chris Smalling has completed a permanent move to Roma, Manchester United have confirmed.

Smalling impressed during his season on loan in the Italian capital last season, playing 37 times as Roma finished fifth in the league and reached the Europa League quarter-finals.

The 30-year-old joined United in 2010 from Fulham and went on to make 323 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 18 goals.

He won two Premier League titles with the Red Devils and tasted success in the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League.

The 31-cap England international will hope to make his first appearance as a permanent Roma player when they host Benevento after the international break on October 18.

United signed Alex Telles from Porto on Monday and are expected to confirm the arrival of Edinson Cavani on a free transfer, while Diego Perotti and Justin Kluivert both left Roma on loan to join Fenerbahce and RB Leipzig respectively.

Justin Kluivert has joined RB Leipzig on a season-long loan from Roma.

Roma paid an initial €17.25million to sign Kluivert from Ajax in June 2018 and he has scored nine goals in 68 appearances for the club.

Following the arrivals of Borja Mayoral and Pedro at the Stadio Olimpico, however, the 21-year-old has been allowed to leave for Leipzig and is looking forward to the chance to play in the Champions League.

"I am glad that the move to RB Leipzig worked out. RB Leipzig showed me in the good conversations we had that the move here is ideal to develop myself further, to take the proverbial next step and to help the team in this way," said Kluivert.

"My goal is to gain match practice here. The Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in the world with high quality, and exciting challenges await us in the Champions League, including Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United – I'm really looking forward to that."

Roma are said to be hoping to bolster their defensive options with a move for Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling, who spent last season on loan with the Serie A side.

However, it has been reported that a disparity in United's demands and what Roma are willing to pay could make a deadline day move for Smalling difficult.

Ousmane Dembele out, Memphis Depay in?

Barcelona want to reunite former Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman with Lyon captain Memphis Depay.

And Dembele is believed to hold the cards amid Manchester United links.

Ousmane Dembele's exit is the key to Barcelona signing Lyon star Memphis Depay, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Lyon captain Depay has an agreement with Barca, but the LaLiga giants must reportedly first sell forward Dembele before bringing in the Dutchman for a rumoured €25million fee.

Dembele is open to joining Manchester United, who are believed to be eyeing the Frenchman as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

United are poised to complete the signings of free agent Edinson Cavani and Porto full-back Alex Telles on Monday's deadline.

But the midfielder may yet depart the Premier League club.

Paris Saint-Germain have made a push to sign Alli on loan before the transfer deadline on Monday, according to The Telegraph.

The 24-year-old England international has been at Spurs since 2015.

- Roma are yet to find a deal to sign Chris Smalling. Fabrizio Romano reports the Serie A club will make a new bid for the Manchester United defender, who impressed on loan at Roma in 2019-20.

- Tiemoue Bakayoko could be set for a move from Chelsea. Gianluca Di Marzio says Napoli are eyeing the midfielder, who has been on loan at Milan and Monaco in the past two seasons.

- As their tough window continues, Manchester United could be getting closer to a signing. Sport 890 reports the Premier League club are set to make a move for Penarol's 18-year-old attacker Facundo Pellistri.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained Chris Smalling is still at the Premier League club because his asking price has not been met.

Smalling was left out of the United squad that beat Luton Town 3-0 in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old defender impressed on loan at Roma last season and the Serie A outfit are understood to want to sign Smalling on a permanent deal, although United are reportedly holding out for an £18million fee.

"At the moment, we've not had any bids up to the level that we want," Solskjaer said after the game at Kenilworth Road.

"So that's the situation."

"That [Smalling's valuation] is not down to me, is it? I'm not the one negotiating between the clubs, but we haven't had sufficient bids there and that's it."

United led on the stroke of half-time through a Juan Mata penalty but were largely lacklustre and needed an excellent save from debutant goalkeeper Dean Henderson before substitutes Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood made the game safe.

Luton, like United, were much-changed and Solskjaer paid tribute to Nathan Jones' side.

"You can see we need match-time," he said, having watched his first-choice United side lose their Premier League opener 3-1 against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

"These players need match-time for sharpness. Levels in English football are getting better, that's their cup team as well, it's not the league team.

"The standard is high in Championship and they did well. They made us work hard to go through, but there were some positives as well.

"I liked the last couple of goals when the ball goes quickly forward, we drive at them. Nice finishes as well."

Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling is keen to return to Roma and could join "in the next few days", according to the Serie A club's head coach Paulo Fonseca.

Smalling impressed during his season on loan in the Italian capital last season, playing 37 times as Roma finished fifth in the league and reached the Europa League quarter-finals.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted last month the defender could still have a future at Old Trafford after reviving his career during that spell away on loan.

However, speaking ahead of Roma's first game of the 2020-21 campaign, Fonseca said he is hopeful an agreement can be reached to re-sign the 31-cap England international.

"I'm in contact to get Smalling. He wants to come back to Rome and we want him," Fonseca told reporters at a news conference previewing Saturday's clash with Hellas Verona.

"In the next few days I think he'll be here with us."

Fonseca also confirmed Edin Dzeko will be part of Roma's squad for their trip to Verona, despite speculation he is close to sealing a move to champions Juventus.

"Dzeko will be with us for the match tomorrow," Fonseca said. "It makes no sense to talk about this, for now he is with us."

Roma brought in young centre-back Marash Kumbulla on Thursday, but he will not slot straight into Roma's starting line-up against his former side this weekend.

"Kumbulla only trained yesterday and today, so he's not ready to start,” Fonseca said. "We have a different way of playing than he did at Verona.

"But he's a very smart guy and has understood what I have told him. We are working to buy young players but we can mix with the more experienced we have here."

Gareth Bale is returning to Tottenham.

Linked with a move from Real Madrid after being frozen out, the Wales international was reportedly a target for Manchester United.

But it seems Bale is heading back to Spurs.

TOP STORY – BALE TO COMPLETE TOTTENHAM RETURN

Bale is completing a return to Tottenham from Madrid, according to The Daily Mail.

The report says Bale has agreed to a season-long loan deal worth more than £13million, part of which will be financed by Madrid.

It comes as ESPN reported Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho sanctioned the move despite being warned Bale would struggle to meet expectations in the Premier League.

Chelsea have not made contact for Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara, reports Romano. Alcantara is wanted by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, while United have held talks with the Spaniard's agent. He has also emerged as a possible target for former club Barca.

It seems little progress was made between Barcelona and Lionel Messi.

Messi, 33, has sensationally requested to leave the LaLiga giants, but the transfer saga looks set to drag on.

A meeting between the parties was tipped to provide some clarity, but it seems little has changed.

TOP STORY – MESSI, BARCELONA YET TO REACH AGREEMENT

Messi and Barcelona did not reach an agreement on Wednesday, according to widespread reports in Spain.

AS reports Messi is insisting he leaves, while Barca are refusing to negotiate.

ROUND-UP

Lionel Messi wants to leave Barcelona but his possible move to Manchester City could prove difficult. Mundo Deportivo reports Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman is a candidate to take over at Camp Nou with Mauricio Pochettino and Al Sadd boss Xavi losing steam. Marca says Pochettino and Koeman are favourites, while Sport reports the former Tottenham manager is the frontrunner. It says Koeman, Massimiliano Allegri, Thierry Henry and Garcia Pimienta are also candidates.

- Elsewhere, Chelsea's apparent search for a defender continues. The Sun reports they are closing in on a £40million move for Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back Lewis Dunk, who is also reportedly a target for Tottenham.

- Staying at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea are also linked with goalkeepers to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Sun says Chelsea and Everton are targeting Watford's 37-year-old shot-stopper Ben Foster.

- After an impressive loan spell at Roma, Chris Smalling is attracting plenty of interest. Sky Sports reports Newcastle United are keen on the Manchester United defender.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted Chris Smalling could have a Manchester United future after he completed an impressive loan spell with Roma.

Defender Smalling on Tuesday stated he was "gutted" that he would play no further part in Roma's quest to win the Europa League.

The centre-back was rock solid at the heart of the Eternal City giants' defence during his season in Italy, but the loan agreement ended after Roma's final Serie A match of the campaign against Juventus on Saturday.

He tweeted following his Roma departure: "I'm gutted that I can't finish what we started this season.

"To experience the love shown to me in such a short time was extra special and it will not be forgotten. I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla. DAJE ROMA!"

Solskjaer suggested the former Fulham man may play a part at Old Trafford next season.

"I think Chris has shown over his career how valuable he is at Manchester United," Solskjaer said ahead of United's Europa League last-16 second-leg tie against LASK on Wednesday.

"This season was about him being regular and going to Roma and showing how good a centre-back he is.

"I wanted to give Harry [Maguire], Vic [Lindelof] and maybe Axel [Tuanzebe] a chance.

"It was best for him to go and play for a year in Roma and he has shown he will be valuable. I've been speaking to Chris throughout and I've been delighted with his season."

Smalling played in 30 of Roma's Serie A matches as they finished fifth, while he also made five starts in the Europa League.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling said he was "gutted" that he would not be involved in the remainder of Roma's Europa League campaign.

The England centre-back has spent the season on loan with the Serie A club, with his deal recently extended to cover the final game of the domestic term last weekend.

However, the latest arrangement agreed between United and Roma did not cover the Europa League, a competition in which Smalling's parent club remain involved.

"I'm gutted that I can't finish what we started this season," Smalling wrote on Twitter alongside four pictures of him in a Roma shirt.

"To experience the love shown to me in such a short time was extra special and it will not be forgotten.

"I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla. DAJE ROMA!"

Smalling, 30, played in 30 of Roma's Serie A matches as they finished fifth, while he also made five starts in the Europa League.

Though Smalling will now return to Old Trafford, he is ineligible for the remainder of United's Europa League campaign.

It may be a different story for Alexis Sanchez - another United loan export who has spent the 2019-20 season in Serie A.

Inter have included the Chilean forward in their squad for the latter stages of the Europa League ahead of their last-16 tie with Getafe this week.

For Sanchez to have any involvement beyond that, Inter and United would need to reach an agreement on a longer-term deal.

Juventus could be getting closer to landing Arkadiusz Milik, while Arthur may have played his last game for Barcelona.

After winning a ninth straight Serie A title, Juve are linked with several forwards.

They may have taken a step closer to bringing one in.

TOP STORY – JUVENTUS AGREE TERMS WITH MILIK
