Trinbago Knight Riders captain Dwayne Bravo admits there was little the team could do after being caught in the wake of a herculean innings from Jamaica Tallawahs all-rounder Andre Russell, which led to a stunning defeat in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) on Friday.

The twin-island republic looked well set to record a second straight victory to begin the competition after belting 225 for 6 and leaving the chasing Tallawahs in deep trouble at 5 for 41.  No one, however, could account for what happened when Russell, the newly appointed captain of the Jamaica-based franchise, came to the crease.

After being dropped off the first ball, the 30-year-old went on to record the fastest CPL century en route to accumulating the highest score in the competition when he cracked 121 off 49 balls.  The performance led the team to a 4-wicket win.  Russel’s 161 partnership with Kenard Lewis was tied for the highest ever recorded in the competition.

“There’s not much you can do.  I’m very happy for him personal, from one player to the next.  He proved why he is the best player in the world at the moment and I just hope he stays fit and healthy,” Bravo said.

“The dew was always a factor, especially in the later stages of the innings but you can’t use that as an excuse.  We’ve played cricket like that for many years now.  I think we were beaten by brilliant individual performances by Andre, backed up by Kenard Lewis who also batted well lower down the order,” Bravo added.

“They batted very well and I can’t fault the effort from my guys.  They gave their best but when someone like Dre is batting there isn’t much you can do.  He beat us off our plans and you just have to respect that.”
