Alia Atkinson ends Clovis Pro meet with 50m gold

Alia Atkinson ended the 2019 Clovis Pro Swim Series on Saturday with an emphatic win in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Atkinson, swimming for the South Florida Aquatics swim team, qualified for the final of the event with a time of 31.17.

In the Championship final, she had the fastest reaction time of 0.62. It was a contest up to the 25-metre mark when began pulling away from the field to win the gold medal in a time of 30.69.

Danielle Herman of the Clovis Club won the silver medal in 31.55 while Mexican Melissa Rodrigues won the bronze medal in 31.86.

Atkinson, who is the national and CAC Games record holder, has the seventh fastest time in the world in this event with her winning time of 30.58 at the Virginia stop of the tour.

Alia, the fastest woman ever from the Caribbean won the silver medal in the event at the 2015 Kazan World Championships in a national record time of 30.11.
