Jamaica's Atkinson fastest into World Championships 50m breaststroke final

Jamaica's Alia Atkinson advanced to the final of the 50m breaststroke at the World Swimming Championships (short course) in Hangzhou, China after winning her semi-final heat on Tuesday morning.

Competing on her 30th birthday, the world record holder and world leader, comfortably won semi-final one in 29.54s, the fastest time going into tomorrow's final (Tuesday evening).

Jenna Laukkanen of Finland was second behind the Jamaican in 29.83s.

The dangerous Katie Mieli of the United States also advanced to the final after finishing third in 30.09 and Fanny Lecluyse of Belgium (30.15).

Also through to the final is Italy's Martina Carraro of Italy, who won the second semi-final heat in 29.79s. Her time was the second fastest heading into the final.

Former world record holder Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania who touched in 29.80.

Atkinson has the world-leading time of 28.56s set during the FINA Short Course World Cup tour.
