Alia Atkinson 100m breaststroke wins in Singapore, Breanna Roman sixth

By November 16, 2018

Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson won her seventh gold medal on the FINA World Cup Tour on Friday, taking the 100m breaststroke on the opening day in Singapore on Friday.

Of note, is that for the first time Atkinson was not the lone Jamaican in the race.

The 29-year-old Atkinson showed once again why she is considered the short-course queen of the breaststroke. She took the event in a fast 1:02.74, well clear of Russia’s Yuliya Efimova, who won the silver medal in 1:03.58.

The Russian’s compatriot Vitalina Simonova won the bronze medal in 1:05.53.

Finishing sixth was Jamaican Breanna Roman, an emerging swimmer, who touched in 1:07.64.

Roman was slightly faster in her heat in which she clocked 1:07.55. Incidentally, Atkinson clocked 1:07.00 to win her heat. Efimova won her heat in 1:05.75s.

Atkinson will go for her eighth gold medal of the season when she swims the 50m breaststroke on Saturday.
