All Blacks unbeaten in 43, an 85 per cent win rate and Wallabies' woes – Eden Park not just a rugby pitch

By Sports Desk October 16, 2020

A fortress for the All Blacks, and a luckless venue for the Wallabies, Australia face a daunting task at Eden Park on Sunday.

New Zealand are unbeaten in their past 43 matches at the Auckland venue, and the Wallabies' record there is abysmal.

The Wallabies and All Blacks played out a thrilling 16-16 draw in the Bledisloe Cup opener in Wellington.

But New Zealand have held the Bledisloe Cup since 2003 and if history is anything to go by, they will almost certainly head to Australia for the final two games of the series with a 1-0 lead.

We take a look at some of the numbers behind the All Blacks' record at Eden Park.

Complete dominance

Not only are the All Blacks carrying an unbeaten run at Eden Park into the clash, it is a ground at which they have been completely dominant.

New Zealand have lost just 10 of their 86 Tests at the ground, winning 73 and drawing three to go at a win rate of 85 per cent.

They have scored 2,449 points and conceded 1,113, those averages sitting at 28.5 and 12.9 respectively.

Beauden Barrett, who is returning from an Achilles injury on Sunday, has scored the most points (100) at Eden Park of any active player. The star has reached that figure in 12 games, but is well adrift of the 202 put together by the great Dan Carter in 14 Tests at the venue.

Barrett may, however, get to the record for most tries scored in Tests there. He has seven of his 36 career tries at the ground, with Stu Wilson (nine) having crossed the most times.

Wallabies' woes

Australia are winless against the All Blacks at the stadium since 1986, and their record at Eden Park makes for dismal reading.

The Wallabies have lost 27 of 32 Tests at the ground, going at a win rate of 16 per cent. Of teams to have played at least five games there – against all opponents – that rates as the third worst. Only Great Britain (one win in 11) and Scotland (0 in six) have been worse.

Wallabies assistant Geoff Parling insisted Eden Park was not scary and labelled it "just a rugby pitch" ahead of the clash, but it has proven to be anything but for Australia.

Australia have scored 418 points in their 32 games at the ground at an average of 13.1 per game, while conceding a whopping 809 – an average of 25.3.

But it is the recent record that has been even worse for the Wallabies, who have been on the end of six thrashings since they beat Wales 21-18 at Eden Park to secure third place at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. In those six meetings against the All Blacks, the Wallabies have been outscored 227-55.

That highlights just the enormity of the turnaround the Wallabies need to cause an upset in Auckland.

Jared Goff said he was unsure if a late field goal would be enough as the quarterback praised the Los Angeles Rams' defense after they held off Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Goff led an eight-play, 53-yard drive that saw Matt Gay convert a 40-yard field goal that was enough for the Rams to edge the Buccaneers 27-24 in the NFL on Monday.

Brady was intercepted by Jordan Fuller for the second time as he tried to respond for the Buccaneers, the Rams winning to improve to 7-3 and go top of the NFC West.

Goff said there were no guarantees against Brady after Gay's field goal with two minutes, 36 seconds remaining.

"You never know. Whenever Brady's on the other side, with that much time, you never know," he told ESPN.

"Our defense stepped up and did a great job and that's a good offense we played today, and a good defense.

    "We did a great job."

Like Brady, Goff threw two interceptions, while the Rams QB went 39 of 51 for 376 yards and three touchdowns.

Goff lamented his own errors before composing himself late, with Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods becoming the fourth team-mate duo in the past 70 years to have 11-plus receptions and 130-plus receiving yards in the same game, as per NFL Research.

"The last drive, we just got back to ourselves," Goff said.

"I was making some pretty dumb mistakes, honestly, at the end there, just not taking care of the ball and being smart with it, got back to ourselves on that last drive and put some points on the board."

Tom Brady struggled as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to the Los Angeles Rams 27-24 in the NFL on Monday.

Brady completed 26 of 48 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns, but the Buccaneers quarterback also threw two interceptions and was sacked once at Raymond James Stadium.

The Rams improved to 7-3 and went top of the NFC West, while the Buccaneers are 7-4 and sit second to the New Orleans Saints (8-2) in the NFC South.

Rams quarterback Jared Goff was 39 of 51 for 376 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, while Cooper Kupp (145) and Robert Woods (130) both had more than 100 receiving yards.

In the end, Goff led a late drive that saw Matt Gay convert a field goal with less than three minutes left, before Brady was intercepted to end the Buccaneers' chances.

Goff picked out Woods to complete a 13-play, 80-yard drive and give the Rams a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Buccaneers responded early in the second quarter, Mike Evans showcasing his power to score after a pass from Brady.

Leonard Fournette rushed over from two yards for the Buccaneers before Van Jefferson scored his first career TD after a pass from Goff to bring the Rams level.

The Rams would go into half-time ahead, Goff and Woods combining for 35 yards to set up Gay's 38-yard field goal.

Since Sean McVay became head coach in 2017, the Rams were 31-0 (now 32-0) when leading at half-time. They are the only undefeated team in such games over that span, with every other having at least two losses, as per NFL Research.

After Ryan Succop's 38-yarder made it 17-17, Gay missed from 44 yards before Brady was easily intercepted by Jordan Fuller.

The Rams capitalised as Goff found Cam Akers for his first career NFL TD.

But Goff was intercepted by Jordan Whitehead to give the Buccaneers an opportunity they would not waste, Chris Godwin diving into the endzone after a 13-yard pass from Brady with less than four minutes remaining.

That score again saw Brady pass Drew Brees for the most passing touchdowns in NFL history, moving onto 566.

Goff led an eight-play, 53-yard drive to putt Gay in position for a 40-yard field goal with two minutes, 40 seconds remaining, and Brady was intercepted by Fuller again as the Rams saw out their win.

  • Ronaldo doesn't receive special treatment at Juventus, says Pirlo Ronaldo doesn't receive special treatment at Juventus, says Pirlo

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo insisted Cristiano Ronaldo does not receive any special treatment at the Serie A giants.

Ronaldo has made a fine start to the season for Juve, scoring eight goals in his first six games.

His brace guided Juve past Cagliari 2-0 on Saturday, and Ronaldo has scored 29 of Juve's 59 Serie A goals in 2020.

Ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash against Ferencvaros, Pirlo discussed Ronaldo – and said the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was treated like any other player.

"I haven't challenged [Ronaldo] on set-pieces yet. I treat him like I treat all the other players. I'm always available on and off the pitch," he told a news conference.

"It's easy to have a good relationship between humble people. I'm like that.

"I behave with him – a champion – like I do with [Gianluca] Frabotta or [Manolo] Portanova, who are two young players.

"I do the same things I was used to doing when I was a player."

All eight of Ronaldo's Serie A goals this season have come from inside the box, while he has converted 75 per cent of his big chances.

Ahead of hosting Ferencvaros, Juventus are second in Group G, three points adrift of Barcelona.
