Jamaica's Sports Ministry contributes £20,000 to Sunshine Girls World Cup dream

Dr Paula Daley-Morris, President of Netball Jamaica said the organisation is extremely grateful for the injection of cash from Jamaica’s sports ministry towards getting the Sunshine Girls to the Netball World Cup in Liverpool this summer.

On Tuesday, Olivia Grange, the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport contributed JMD$3.5 million dollars (approximately £20,000) to Netball Jamaica, prompting effusive praise from the president.

“She continues to help the Sunshine Girls. She knows that we need her support and she has been with us 100 per cent and as usual, we thank the minister wholeheartedly for the funds she has provided to cover the accommodation and the equalization fee for the upcoming World Cup and we look forward to the continued support,” Dr Daley-Morris said.

“We have no doubt she will continue to support us because she has been behind us from the beginning of my administration and I know she is going to finish the journey as we go for gold in Liverpool.”

The Minister, the Honourable Olivia Grange presented the cheque to Patricia Robinson, 1st Vice President of Netball Jamaica.

“I am happy to present this cheque of JMD$3.5 million dollars to Netball Jamaica which will be of great assistance as you prepare for the World Cup,” Minister Grange said.

“Jamaica is fortunate. This is the year of the girls, our Sunshine Girls are going to England in July and our Reggae Girls to France in June. We are looking for great things.“

The Sunshine Girls ranked third in the world, have qualified for the World Cup every year since 2015. The Ministry’s contribution to the Sunshine Girls was provided through the Sports Development Foundation.

The Jamaican team will open its campaign against Fiji on July 15.
