All to play for in Berger Elite League finale Saturday

By January 25, 2019

Defending champions Kingston Hummingbirds and Manchester Spurs, clash in the critical winner-take-all Game 3 of the Berger Elite League at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday, January 26, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Silverware, cash and medals await the winners, as well as bragging rights for another year, are all at stake.

The teams are locked at one after the Spurs won Game 2 57-53 against the Hummingbirds on Wednesday night. The defending champions won the opening match 59-52 on Monday and their head coach Winston Nevers believes the team will have to be a lot better than they were on Wednesday if they are to retain the title.

“Saturday we’ll have to start sharp to keep this because it looks like … although they have a lot of young players, it looks like our team is the fitter team because we continue to win the two last quarters every time,” he said.

The Hummingbirds were hampered by an injury to shooter Sabrina Spence who was controlled by the Spurs’ Tracey-Ann Robinson and Shannika ‘Bolt’ Johnson. The combination served to lower the Hummingbird’s ability to score.

“What we need to do is just keep possession of the ball, shoot the ball … our shooter, Sabrina Spence, she isn’t strong enough. ‘Bolt’ continues to move her out of her comfort zone and that is the reason why she missed so many shots and did not get the ball like how she got it on Monday evening,” Nevers explained.

The Manchester Spurs, meanwhile, played near perfect netball on Wednesday and head coach, Connie Francis, wants her team to come prepared for a repeat performance.

“It’s how we enter each quarter. I think we’ll have to improve on that and how we keep stagnant. So we have to keep that rotation going and talk and continue to shoot well,” she said.
