Rockets star Harden joins Houston Dynamo ownership group

By Sports Desk July 18, 2019

James Harden has joined MLS club Houston Dynamo's ownership group.

The Dynamo announced on Thursday that the Houston Rockets superstar had become part of the group led by Gabriel Brener, also owners of the NWSL's Houston Dash.

Harden, arguably the face of Houston sports and winner of the NBA MVP award in 2018, joins six-weight world champion Oscar De La Hoya in the group.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to join the ownership group of the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash and proud to be a part of a club with tremendous history and a great future," Harden said in a statement.

"Houston is my home now, and I saw this as a way to invest in my city and expand my business interests at the same time. Soccer in general, and especially MLS, have exploded in this country throughout my lifetime.

"I've been a fan of the game for several years, and I know that Houston has a massive soccer fanbase, so it was an easy decision for me when this opportunity arose."

"We are thrilled to welcome James into our club. He's an icon in the Houston community, and not only is he a great basketball player, he has an extremely smart and savvy mind for business," Brener said.

"James will bring a very unique perspective to our ownership group, and I'm looking forward to hearing his thoughts and opinions on the club going forward."

Josef Martinez continued his incredible form to lead Atlanta United to another win in MLS, while the Seattle Sounders climbed the table on Friday.

Reigning Scotiabank Concacaf League champion CS Herediano of Costa Rica grabbed a slim edge in its 2019 SCL Round of 16 series with a key away goal against Jamaica’s Waterhouse in a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.

Waterhouse went right to work on the reigning champion and Andre Fletcher took advantage of space in the Herediano penalty area to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead in the 2’.

Two minutes later, Herediano’s Bryan Rubio almost answered Fletcher’s early score with the equalizer, but saw his shot hit the post. The Ticos would draw even though in the 17’, as Keyner Brown spun a header over the arms of Waterhouse GK Akeen Chambers to make it 1-1.

Herediano started to increase the pressure on the Waterhouse defense in the second half and had two very good looks at goal, only to see Keysher Fuller fire just over the crossbar, followed by a Freddy Alvarez strike that forced Chambers into a big save.

In the end, the two sides would have to settle for the draw, leaving the tie up for grabs going into next week’s second leg.

  • Kompany injured as Anderlecht lose again Kompany injured as Anderlecht lose again

Vincent Kompany was substituted after suffering an injury on Friday as Anderlecht lost again.

The former Manchester City captain saw his role as player-manager for his first professional club change this week.

It was confirmed Kompany will now act as captain on matchdays with first-team coach Simon Davies in charge of tactics.

But after Anderlecht took two points from their first four games, the switch failed to yield an immediate improvement at Genk on Friday.

Mbwana Samatta scored the only goal of the game to earn last season's Belgian champions a narrow 1-0 victory.

And to make matters worse for Kompany, the Belgium centre-back limped off with 15 minutes to go after seemingly suffering a muscle injury.

Kompany is due to play in his City testimonial on September 11, but his participation in that game may now be in doubt.

Manchester City Legends will take on a Premier League All-Stars XI featuring players including Rafael van der Vaart.
