Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) technical director Wendell Downswell has revealed that a key aim of the national team is to move into the world’s top 30 within the next year.

The Jamaica squad, currently perched at 48th in the world, has risen steadily in the world rankings in the last year.  Downswell, however, signalled that the intention is not only to keep the team steady in the top 50 but to move even higher.  According to the former national coach, the team’s participation in the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League will form a crucial part of those plans.

"The CONCACAF Nations League forms an integral part of our overall programme. It allows us now to compete on a regular basis at minimal cost and it also gives us a chance within the window to play another international game," Downswell told CONCACAF.com.

"We have to strategically tap into these windows as it pertains to us getting the necessary exposure and experience. We are aiming to improve our ranking and over the next year our intention is to get to thirty or higher," he added.

Jamaica’s highest ever ranking was 27th in 1998 shortly after the team's historic qualification to the World Cup.

The Reggae Boyz will open their Nations League qualifying at home to the Cayman Islands in September. They also have fixtures with Bonaire, Suriname and El Salvador.
