MLS: Los Angeles FC crush San Jose, Galaxy win again

By Sports Desk September 03, 2020

Los Angeles FC recorded a resounding win in MLS on Wednesday, while the Galaxy extended their winning streak.

After three straight losses in all competitions, Los Angeles FC responded by thrashing the San Jose Earthquakes 5-1 at Banc of California Stadium.

Diego Rossi's beautiful finish into the corner opened the scoring after a poor turnover of possession by the Earthquakes in the 21st minute.

But LAFC had to wait until the second half to truly take control.

Another bad turnover allowed Bradley Wright-Phillips through to double the lead, before Jose Cifuentes made it 3-0.

Rossi added his second in the 69th minute before Danny Musovski made it 5-0, Danny Hoesen later adding a consolation goal for San Jose.

The win lifted LAFC up into third in the Western Conference, with San Jose sitting 11th.

The Galaxy made it three straight wins by edging the Portland Timbers 3-2 at Providence Park.

Efrain Alvarez opened the scoring for the Galaxy, completing a fine team move with a finish into the top corner from inside the area.

It took until five minutes into the second half for the visitors to double their lead through Cristian Pavon's individual effort.

Felipe Mora gave Portland hope with a 67th-minute goal, but Joe Corona struck for the Galaxy with a wonderful 20-yard strike.

Diego Valeri came off the bench to add a second for Portland in additional time.

The Timbers are sixth in the Western Conference, one spot behind the Galaxy while being level on points.

Columbus Crew returned to the top of the Eastern Conference after a 1-0 win over Philadelphia Union.

Lucas Zelarayan's deflected 25-yard effort in the 55th minute was enough for Columbus.

Elsewhere, Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City were held to a 1-1 draw by Dallas.

Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders drew 2-2 in a clash that featured a screamer from Pablo Ruiz, while Orlando City played out a 1-1 draw with Nashville.

New York City overcame New England Revolution 2-0, Houston Dynamo beat Minnesota United 3-0 and Erik Sorga scored a 98th-minute winner for DC United as they edged the New York Red Bulls 1-0.

Atlanta United and Inter Miami drew 0-0, while Cincinnati's clash with Chicago Fire also finished goalless.

Erling Haaland has been ruled out until January with a torn hamstring that head coach Lucien Favre has suggested could have been avoided had the striker not been overused.

The Norway international was left out of Dortmund's squad for Wednesday's 1-1 Champions League draw with Lazio as a result of the injury he sustained in training.

He has featured 14 times for Dortmund in all competitions this term, starting 13 of those games and scoring 17 times.

However, BVB will now have to make do without the 20-year-old for the remainder of 2020 in a major blow for Favre.

"He won't play before the beginning of January. He may have played too much," Favre told Sky Germany. "At first we thought it wouldn't be that bad. But he can't play now."

Dortmund sit four points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich and face Eintracht Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Werder Bremen and Union Berlin before the end of the year.

They also have a trip to Eintracht Braunschweig in the DFB-Pokal second round and a Champions League meeting with Zenit next week in what is a hectic month.

Haaland, who netted 16 goals in just 18 appearances for the club last season, will hope to be back for Dortmund's trip to high-flying RB Leipzig on January 9, which comes six days after they host Wolfsburg to begin 2021.

Since Haaland's debut, Dortmund have been without the star for just three Bundesliga matches – but they have won all of them while scoring nine goals. With Haaland, Dortmund have recorded 16 wins and seven losses since his debut in January.

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed striker Erling Haaland has suffered a hamstring injury.

The Norway star was left out of the squad for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Lazio at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund tweeted to confirm the 20-year-old has a muscle problem, which he reportedly sustained in training.

The news is a blow for Lucien Favre's side, who will secure qualification for the last 16 by avoiding defeat to lazio.

Haaland has scored 16 goals in the competition at a rate of one every 56 minutes, which is the best average of any player with at least 10 goals in the competition. He is just three short of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's record of 19 for a Norwegian player.

Former Salzburg striker Haaland also has 10 goals in eight Bundesliga appearances in 2020-21 for a Dortmund side who sit four points behind leaders Bayern Munich after nine games.

They face Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday before next Tuesday's final Champions League group game against Zenit.
