Messi thought Neymar would join Real Madrid

By Sports Desk October 09, 2019

Neymar signing for Real Madrid was a prospect Lionel Messi feared was about to become a reality.

The Brazil superstar featured in a lethal front three alongside Messi and Luis Suarez at Camp Nou before joining Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record €222m move two years ago.

Reports of Neymar wishing to return to LaLiga have been frequent since then and an 'MSN' reunion was mooted during the close season.

But with Barcelona unable to put together a package to make the deal happen, Messi worried his old team-mate would end up pulling on the famous white shirt of their sworn rivals.

"I honestly thought that in this market, if he did not come here, he would go to Madrid, because I really thought he wanted to leave," five-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi told RAC1.

"He said it, he wanted to change, to leave Paris. I thought that Florentino [Perez, Real Madrid president] and Madrid would do something to take him away."

Barcelona still boast a plethora of elite forward options.

Messi is back to fitness after a calf problem delayed his start to the 2019-20 season, while Suarez came through a period of criticism to score four times in the space of eight days before the international break.

Big-money arrival Antoine Griezmann is still bedding in, although his fellow France international Ousmane Dembele must serve a suspension having been sent off for dissent during the 4-0 victory against Sevilla last time out.

In his report, referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz said Dembele told him he was "very bad, you're very bad" in response to Barca youngster Ronald Araujo being red-carded.

Like coach Ernesto Valverde, Messi was perplexed by the incident – mainly due to Dembele's lack of aptitude with the Spanish language – that means the winger is set to miss El Clasico at Camp Nou later this month.

"It is very difficult for him to be able to say that because it is difficult for him to put together sentences and speak well enough to speak clearly," Messi said.

"The coach supported him at a press conference. The truth is we were surprised that [the referee] understood it so clearly because Ousmane has a hard time speaking Spanish – although he makes himself understood and understands everything.

"It's difficult [to accept the referee] understood it so clearly. That's just the way it is."

    - Spanish outlet ElDesmarque reports news that could complicate any Bale-Pogba exchange, stating that although Madrid are indeed keen on France playmaker Pogba, so too are the player's former club Juventus, with Cristiano Ronaldo said to be supportive.

Paris Saint-Germain are rumoured to be United's strongest rivals for Jadon Sancho and the Ligue 1 side could make a surprise play for another England international. • KC join Clarendon in final after penalty win over JC KC join Clarendon in final after penalty win over JC

Kingston College (KC) are through to the final of the ISSA Champions Cup after a dower affair against Jamaica College (JC) ended in penalties at the National Stadium in Kingston on Saturday.

There was a flurry of chances when the game just began but the quality of football dipped with the increasing intensity of the rain. With first-half action coming to an end, KC struck. A long ball played out from the back by the unusually deep Jahmari Morrison was poorly cleared by Nickache Murray, when the sliced clearance fell, it was Demario McCarthy who was first to it and his sliding effort was struck perfectly to give KC a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

It seemed that would be all she wrote for JC because truth be told, they hadn’t looked likely to trouble the KC backline too much.

That changed with the game winding down and in driving rain, JC got a corner in the 83rd minute.

KC cleared partially cleared that corner but it fell kindly to a JC boot. A shot from that boot ricocheted to the left side of the field where a JC player dismissed his marker and whipped in a beautiful cross for Shadae Lopez to head into the far corner.

JC had their tails up and KC had some hair-raising moments after that.

But time would run out on JC and they would have to try to do it from the penalty spot.

KC missed their first two penalties but JC could not maintain their lead, striking the woodwork with one penalty and then seeing another saved.

The Manning Cup champions began striking their penalties more confidently and JC folded under the pressure to end up 3-2 losers.

KC will now face Clarendon College who had things go all their way in their semi-final against Clarendon College, winning 3-0.

  • Koulibaly at home with Napoli amid Man United links Koulibaly at home with Napoli amid Man United links

Kalidou Koulibaly reaffirmed his affection for Napoli amid ongoing links to Premier League giants Manchester United.

United continue to be linked with a move for highly rated Napoli defender Koulibaly, despite the world-record signing of Harry Maguire at the start of the season.

The Red Devils are reportedly keen to bolster their backline, which has been problematic in recent seasons, even after the arrivals of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.

However, star centre-back and Senegal international Koulibaly said he is happy in Naples.

"This is where my children were born," Koulibaly wrote via Twitter. "This is where I grew up as a man and a player.

"This is where my family and I feel at home #Napoli."

Koulibaly has established himself as one of the world's best defenders since swapping Genk for Napoli in 2014.

The 28-year-old has made 10 Serie A appearances this season and 14 across all competitions for Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli.
