Bailey post riles up hopeful England fans

Leon Bailey. Leon Bailey.

Some fans of the England football team were left mired in frustration after misconstruing an Instagram post from Jamaica-born Bundesliga winger Leon Bailey as the country’s squad was announced on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old was the subject of intense speculation after claims surfaced he could have been eligible to represent England ahead of the World Cup.  According to the claims, the player qualified based on the fact that his grandparents held British passports.  The rumours were of course never substantiated and several sources claim the player was never eligible to represent the three lions as his grandparents were not born in England, therefore making him ineligible.

On Wednesday, ahead of the announcement Bailey caused quite a stir with an Instagram post titled ‘Humble Lion', which was accompanied by a picture of him on a beach, staring out to sea.  The footballer did go on to mention the word 'tattoo' in the hashtag, a reference to the image of a lion which is inked on his right arm.

A few England fans, however, interpreted the post as a sign that a completely unexpected call-up for England was set to be announced.  Of course when the squad was announced the Jamaican was not listed among the 22.
