Rashford plays through the pain to leave Solskjaer 'delighted' with win in Granada

By Sports Desk April 08, 2021

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was proud of the battling qualities displayed by Marcus Rashford as he played through the pain to help Manchester United beat Granada.

Troubled by a niggling ankle problem, Rashford opened the scoring at the Nuevo Los Carmenes on Thursday, latching onto Victor Lindelof's long pass before finishing with composure.

The goal took Rashford to 20 for the season in all competitions, making him the first United player to hit double figures in consecutive campaigns since Wayne Rooney 11 years ago.

The England forward, who was taken off 10 minutes after scoring in last weekend's 2-1 Premier League win over Brighton and Hove Albion, battled on against Granada before being substituted with a little over 25 minutes left.

Solskjaer, who hopes Rashford will be fit to face Tottenham on Sunday, was delighted with Rashford's impact against stubborn opposition.

"Marcus, fantastic goal," he said. "Great pass by Victor, great run and the skill to bring the ball down like this, we've seen it a few times before, and it's a top, top quality goal.

"It's the same thing as before, he's not recovered from it. Hopefully, it's not got any worse from this. He lasted 60 or 70 against Brighton, 65 now, so hopefully he's ready. I think he should be ready for Sunday."

When asked if he ever told former manager Alex Ferguson he was fully fit to play when struggling with injury, Solskjaer replied: "Yeah, I probably did! I did a few times. It's not like I couldn't perform, but I probably knew I wasn't at 100 per cent. But when are you at 100 per cent as a footballer? I think that's very rare.

"We know he's someone we have to protect, and he was ready, and he was vital for us today."

While comfortable in defence, United offered little threat of a second goal until Bruno Fernandes scored his 19th penalty for the club after being pushed in the face by Yan Eteki.

The Portugal star, who was struggling with his vision in one eye after the foul, squeezed a shot beneath goalkeeper Rui Silva in the 90th minute.

With Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay suspended for the second leg after receiving yellow cards, Solskjaer was relieved to be heading back to Old Trafford with a more commanding advantage.

"It was an important goal, the second one. A 1-0 lead, losing three players, is not a good position to be in," he said.

"I don't think we deserved those five yellow cards, but that's happened. I'm delighted with the result, of course.

"[The second goal] is so vital away from home and we've created a good starting point for ourselves next week.

"Scoring with one eye is a skill! He drives the team and drives himself. He's got such enthusiasm and hunger to win and to do well. I've played in teams with a lot stronger personalities than that, to be honest.

"That's the way for us to improve and reach the next level: always demand more, and more, and more."

Shaw was taken off at half-time, but Solskjaer added of the left-back: "I had to protect Luke, but I think and hope he should be okay for the weekend."

Manchester United have allowed talented youngster Facundo Pellistri to re-join LaLiga side Deportivo Alaves on loan for the 2021-22 season.

Pellistri, 19, joined United from Penarol in his native Uruguay last October before moving to Alaves in January for the second half of 2020-21 in search of first-team football.

He featured 12 times in Spain's top flight, five appearances coming as a starter, with Alaves ultimately finishing 16th and avoiding relegation.

Pellistri returned to Old Trafford for pre-season and enjoyed a fairly prominent role with many of United's attacking players yet to return from international duty.

He scored a lovely goal that turned out to be the winner in the 2-1 friendly victory over Wayne Rooney's Derby County, before teeing up Jesse Lingard against QPR and also appearing for the best part of 30 minutes at home to Brentford.

His performances led some fans to suggest Pellistri could be a viable option in the United first-team in 2021-22, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer always hinted another loan move was likely – with Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood and Amad Diallo all seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order on the right flank, a temporary departure has come to pass.

The teenager will hope to have slightly more of an impact on the pitch at Alaves in 2021-22 than last season, however.

While his talent on the ball was obvious, his 2.5 successful dribbles per game more than any other player in the squad between January 1 and the end of the season, creatively he struggled to be influential.

Pellistri only averaged 0.33 chances created per 90 minutes – among the outfield Alaves players to feature for more than 20 minutes after January 1, only six players were less effective at picking out key passes.

  • Broken leg shock for Premier League rising star Fofana Broken leg shock for Premier League rising star Fofana

Leicester City's outstanding young French defender Wesley Fofana suffered a broken leg in the friendly win over Villarreal, he has revealed.

The former Saint-Etienne player featured in Wednesday evening's 3-2 victory over the Europa League champions.

He was forced out of the game after an hour, though, after challenging for the ball with opposition forward Nino.

Now Fofana, 20, faces missing the start of the Premier League season as he prepares for a spell on the sidelines.

After being carried off on a stretcher, Fofana was taken to hospital and posted a late-night bulletin revealing his bad news.

Fofana wrote on Instagram: "It is a bad day today but I am in a tremendous club with a wonderful medical team. I will give you news as a soon as I have a final diagnosis but we already know that I have a fibula fracture. I will come soon and stronger: do not worry."

Reflecting his positive outlook, he accompanied the message with a smiling picture from his hospital bed.

Fofana joined Leicester from Saint-Etienne last October and became a key figure in Brendan Rodgers' Foxes team, who finished fifth in the 2020-21 Premier League. In May, he was named the club's young player of the season.

Of all defenders in the English top flight, Fofana was one of just two to attempt at least 50 tackles while also making 50 interceptions and 50 headers clearances last season.

Aston Villa's Matt Targett was the other to achieve that triple feat.

Among defenders who started at least 20 games, Fofana had the fourth highest tackle success rate, with his percentage of 72.55 bettered only by West Ham's Craig Dawson, Liverpool's left-back Andrew Robertson and Newcastle United's Federico Fernandez.

  • Tuchel speaks about Chelsea move for 'fantastic' Lukaku Tuchel speaks about Chelsea move for 'fantastic' Lukaku

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel labelled Romelu Lukaku a "fantastic player" but has refused to be drawn on potentially signing the Internazionale striker.

The European champions have been heavily linked with the Belgium international, who was on Chelsea's books from 2011 to 2014.

Inter reportedly rejected Chelsea's second offer worth £85m (€100m) along with Marcos Alonso for Lukaku, with the Blues set to table another bid believed to be worth £102m (€120m).

Tuchel would not be drawn on the situation following Chelsea's 2-2 friendly draw with Tottenham.

“I will not talk about players who don't play in my squad," Tuchel told reporters. "He's a fantastic player but he's an Inter player and I will not talk about him in this situation."

Chelsea are yet to make any major signings this off-season but have also been linked with a big-money move for Erling Haaland.

Tuchel added: “You can imagine a lot of players want to come and join but we will not talk about that.

“The board isn't offering players, that's not how it works. We talk to the board about players, have our own opinions, and in the end we target players who in our opinion could make our squad strong, which is quite a challenge.

“There are some players of which we think they can be a good target and improvement in our squad. I will not comment on names as I don't like it when other coaches speak about my players. So hopefully you understand that.”

Lukaku scored 24 goals from 36 games in Serie A as Inter won the Scudetto in 2020-21.
