Vinicius Junior returns to Brazil squad as Tite rotates youngsters

By Sports Desk October 23, 2020

Vinicius Junior earned a recall to the Brazil squad on Friday as head coach Tite explained his intention to rotate his less experienced players.

After being left out of the team for the opening games of Brazil's 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign in October, Vinicius returned at the expense of Real Madrid team-mate Rodrygo.

Bruno Guimaraes made way for Arthur, while Rodrigo Caio held onto his spot in the group and Felipe was dropped for Eder Militao, who only made his first appearance of the season for Madrid last weekend.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson and Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus were included as expected after missing last month's matches through injury, with Santos and Matheus Cunha consequently left out.

"For the young players it's a matter of process, of maturity in their clubs. [Their selection depends on] the best moment, the degree of confidence they have," said Tite.

"For this reason, I'll sometimes use Vinicius, Rodrygo, Bruno Guimaraes...

"[Vinicius] is a player that offers width, goes one on one, has extraordinary physical attributes. Say a normal car has five gears – he has six or seven."

Brazil sit top of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying section after wins over Bolivia and Peru in their opening fixtures.

The Selecao are scheduled to entertain Venezuela and travel to Uruguay during the next international break in November.

Brazil squad:

Karim Benzema is back in the Real Madrid starting XI to face Shakhtar Donetsk as one of four changes made by Zinedine Zidane.

The influential French centre-forward has six goals in 11 appearances across all competitions this season, but he has not featured since netting in a 4-1 LaLiga defeat to Valencia on November 8.

In his absence due to a muscular issue, Benzema's team-mates have fared little better, following a 1-1 draw at Villarreal with a 2-1 defeat at home to Deportivo Alaves.

They did at least manage a 2-0 win against Inter in between those domestic disappointments, leaving them second in Champions League Group B.

Madrid are on seven points, one shy of Borussia Monchengladbach and three ahead of a Shakhtar side who claimed a shock 3-2 win in the Spanish capital to launch their campaign.

Zidane has also recalled Ferland Mendy, Martin Odegaard and Rodrygo to face the Ukrainian champions.

Sergio Ramos might not be fit enough to play for Real Madrid at the moment, but the captain is feeling in shape to have a crack at Conor McGregor.

Madrid's talismanic skipper teased the UFC superstar with a message from Madrid's gym, suggesting he would jump at the chance to take on the Irishman.

Hit by a hamstring injury and absent from the squad that travelled to Kiev to face Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday in the Champions League, Ramos has been making good use of Madrid's weights room.

He posted a picture of himself, topless and grinning, walking through the gym as he flexed his muscles.

Both Ramos and McGregor are heavily tattooed and often bushily bearded, and the Madrid skipper captioned his video: "When you're ready, @thenotoriousmma."

That was followed by a winking emoji, with Ramos probably well aware he would come off second best in the Octagon against the man from Dublin.

McGregor (22-4-0) is currently in training for a UFC comeback, having done a U-turn on the retirement he announced in June.

He will fight against American Dustin Poirier on January 23 in a rematch of their September 2014 bout at UFC 178, with the clash expected to happen in Abu Dhabi.

Ramos, meanwhile, was recently named among the 11 nominations for The Best FIFA men's player award, with the 34-year-old having led Madrid to last season's LaLiga title.

  • Messi yellow card for Maradona tribute should be overturned, says Koeman Messi yellow card for Maradona tribute should be overturned, says Koeman

Lionel Messi should have the yellow card he was shown for his on-pitch tribute to Diego Maradona rescinded, according to Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman.

Former Barca and Argentina great Maradona died last week at the age of 60 and was honoured before all LaLiga matches over the weekend.

Messi scored his side's fourth goal in fine style during Sunday's 4-0 home win over Osasuna.

Afterwards, he removed his Barca shirt to reveal a Newell's Old Boys jersey emblazoned with Maradona's famous number 10.

He then pointedly saluted the sky in honour of his compatriot, who spent a season towards the end of his career with Newell's - the club where Messi began his youth career.

Following the victory, Koeman told the media how impressed he was both with his captain's finish and with the way he chose to pay his respects to his compatriot.

The yellow card shown to Messi, which regulations state will come with a €3,000 fine for Barca, has attracted attention after the match and Koeman believes it should be overturned.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's away Champions League match against Ferencvaros, for which Messi will be rested, Koeman said: "We know that there is a rule [relating to the award of] the yellow card.

"But we also know that it was his dedication to Maradona when he took off his shirt.

"It's not my decision, but for me I would take it off."

Barca are hopeful the yellow card decision will be changed.

According to Sport, they will use the precedent of Sergio Ramos having a booking overturned on sentimental grounds in 2007 after he paid tribute to Sevilla star Antonio Puerta to argue their case.

Barcelona have won all of their previous five competitive meetings with Hungarian sides and dominated the Camp Nou fixture against Ferencvaros in a 5-1 triumph last month.

Messi opened the scoring with a penalty in that game and also laid on a late assist for Ousmane Dembele.

However, he will now sit out of a second straight Champions League match, having also been rested for the 4-0 win over Dynamo Kiev last time out in the competition.

Barca have fared surprisingly well without Messi, winning eight of their last nine Champions League games that he missed and drawing the other since losing to Ajax in 2013, according to Opta statistics.

The club are looking to win each of their first five UEFA Champions League group stage games for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign.
