Real Madrid 1-0 Real Valladolid: Vinicius spares Man Utd target Jovic's blushes

By Sports Desk September 30, 2020

Vinicius Junior came to Real Madrid's rescue as a sluggish start to their LaLiga season continued with a 1-0 home win over Real Valladolid on Wednesday.

Madrid were held to a goalless draw at Real Sociedad in their opener and then required a late Sergio Ramos penalty to beat Real Betis on Saturday, and a lack of cutting edge threatened to prove costly on their return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Luka Jovic – a reported Manchester United target – was particularly guilty, missing two golden chances before the break.

Jovic’s frustration was compounded in the second half – his replacement Vinicius on hand to snatch a precious winner to send Madrid level with leaders Getafe.

The frustrating tone was set early as Roberto made an instinctive stop to keep Madrid at bay in the 10th minute, springing to his right to turn Federico Valverde's cushioned volley around the post.

Jovic helped craft that chance, but the former Eintracht Frankfurt man soon squandered a huge opportunity of his own as he inexplicably missed the target when found in front of goal by Valverde.

He was wasteful again 10 minutes before half-time, lashing past the left-hand post following a smart Luka Modric touch.

The Serbia forward saw a header saved by Roberto after the restart, with Casemiro slamming the rebound against the crossbar, with a subsequent chance for Shon Weissman – who was denied by Thibaut Courtois – provoking Zinedine Zidane into a triple-change.

Jovic was among those to make way and the move prompted the opener, with Vinicius profiting on a deflection in the area to finish coolly.

Courtois had to be alert to parry away a wayward Raul Garcia cross, yet Madrid might have added to their lead in the closing stages as Modric exposed Roberto's poor positioning but struck the base of the upright.

What does it mean? Madrid doing just enough

Madrid played some good football in the closing stages of last season as they clinched the title, but they are just getting by in the opening weeks of the new campaign. They were comfortable in terms of possession, enjoying 63 per cent, while they had five shots on target, yet Zidane will hope more straightforward victories are to follow.

Courtois kept busy

The chances that fell Jovic's way could have seen Madrid home and dry by half-time, but with his outfield team-mates wasteful, Courtois had to step up. The Belgium goalkeeper pulled off five saves in all, with each of them coming at crucial ventures, most notably a fine stop from Weissman at 0-0.

Luka's luck not turning

Jovic may eventually get a second chance at Madrid if he returns from an expected loan move away, but this performance summed up his spell at Los Blanco so far. The 22-year-old has scored just twice in all competitions for Madrid but had three chances to improve that tally here. Only one of his trio of efforts hit the target and he was replaced after 58 minutes.

What's next?

Madrid are in LaLiga action again on Sunday at Levante, while Valladolid host Eibar a day earlier.

Ansu Fati has been urged to scale new heights with Barcelona as he marks his 18th birthday with another LaLiga outing.

The young forward has caught the eye since making his debut for the Camp Nou giants as a 16-year-old, and four goals in his first five league appearances this season have confirmed his progress.

Fati, the youngest goalscorer in Barcelona's history, has also established himself in the Spain squad and could take the delayed Euro 2020 by storm if his rise continues.

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has come to regard Fati as a key component in his team, but the Dutch coach says there are areas where the teenager can still improve.

As Fati celebrates on Saturday, he and Barcelona head to Alaves for their latest LaLiga clash, looking to bounce back from last weekend's 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the season's first Clasico.

Koeman revealed he spoke with Fati on Thursday to offer a timely reminder of how he can take his performances to the next level.

"I was with Ansu a little while talking about concentration," Koeman said. "I think that he needs to improve in this sense.

"When he loses the ball, it's because of a question of concentration, not because of his quality. In this sense he can improve and he has our help every day.

"He's a very talented player, he's a really good player. He's got a really high level of playing so we need to look after him and especially help him with his career projection and his concentration.

"He needs to be ready and focused to improve."

Fati himself told the Mundo Deportivo newspaper: "This is just the beginning, I hope to celebrate more years as a Barca player."

With his goal in the defeat against Madrid last week, Fati became the youngest player in the 21st century to score in El Clasico, at 17 years and 359 days.

This season he has also become the first player to score more than once in the Champions League before turning 18.

He was the first LaLiga player born in 2000 or later to score 10 or more goals in all competitions, also becoming in September the youngest player from the top five European leagues to reach double figures in goals since the beginning of last season.

At 17 years and 311 days, Fati became Spain's youngest ever goalscorer when he marked his first start for the national team with a strike in the 4-0 win over Ukraine on September 6.

Birthday wishes for Fati came on Saturday from LaLiga, who tweeted to list a string of his achievements and declare: "The world is yours."

  • Rumour Has It: Mbappe eyes Real Madrid, Neymar wants PSG stay Rumour Has It: Mbappe eyes Real Madrid, Neymar wants PSG stay

Kylian Mbappe seems set to leave Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe's future with the Ligue 1 giants is a constant talking point with the star forward coming out of contract in 2022.

And it seems the 21-year-old wants an exit.

TOP STORY – MBAPPE WANTS PSG EXIT

Mbappe wants to leave PSG next year, according to OKdiario.

The report says the France international wants a smooth transfer to Real Madrid, otherwise he will make a move for free in 2022.

Mbappe has helped PSG win three straight Ligue 1 titles since his arrival, initially on loan, from Monaco in 2017.

PSG have won 64 of 81 Ligue 1 games with Mbappe from 2017-18 onwards, while recording 22 victories in 30 without him.

In that period they have averaged 2.9 goals for per game with him, compared to 2.5 without him.

    ROUND-UP

    - Another PSG star coming out of contract in 2022 is Neymar. However, in good news for the Ligue 1 giants, the forward wants to extend his contract, according to Foot Mercato, which says Neymar was ready to sign a five-year deal under the same financial conditions earlier in 2020.

    - Manchester United could be set to bolster their midfield ahead of next season. Bild reports the Premier League club are in talks with Milan's Hakan Calhanoglu, who it says rejected Juventus. United could sign Calhanoglu for free with his contract expiring at the season's end.

    - Another transfer race has reportedly not gone Manchester United's way. Fabrizio Romano says Manchester City will sign 18-year-old Filip Stevanovic from Partizan for £7.2million (€8m), including add-ons.

    - Staying at Manchester City and ESPN says Barcelona will again attempt to sign defender Eric Garcia in January. Garcia was linked with a return to the LaLiga giants earlier this year, but the report adds the incoming president will have to approve any potential deal.

    - Atletico Madrid are pushing hard to sign Valencia midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, according to Le 10 Sport.

  • Mbappe should sign for Real Madrid – Pires Mbappe should sign for Real Madrid – Pires

Kylian Mbappe should join Real Madrid if he wants to continue improving, according to former France international Robert Pires.

Mbappe, 21, has been heavily linked with a move to Madrid after starring at Paris Saint-Germain, where he is contracted until 2022.

Pires, who turned down Madrid during his playing career, said Mbappe should make the move to the LaLiga giants – and the former Arsenal and France midfielder can see it happening.

"Of course. I'm French, I like Paris Saint-Germain and I'd like him to stay in Ligue 1," he told AS.

"But if he wants to keep growing as a player, he should sign for Real Madrid."

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has previously revealed his admiration for Mbappe, who has six goals and five assists in seven games this season.

Mbappe provided two assists to Moise Kean in PSG's 2-0 Champions League win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday.

Since the start of 2017-18, Mbappe has more assists (15) in the Champions League than any other player.

Zidane has also been under pressure at Madrid, who have won just one of their past four games in all competitions ahead of hosting Huesca on Saturday.

"I think it's incredible that people talk about a crisis and the end of an era when Real Madrid lose two games before the Clasico and then draw at the death against Borussia Monchengladbach," Pires said.

"I know there's a lot of pressure at Madrid, but the coach and the players need to be given a calmer climate in which to do their job.

"Just because they're Madrid or Barcelona, they can't always beat everybody. If that were the case, football would be very boring."

Madrid are third in the LaLiga table, a point behind Real Sociedad and Cadiz, although they can go top with a win over Huesca.
