Manchester City 5-0 Norwich City: Record-equalling De Bruyne stars in fitting Silva farewell

By Sports Desk July 26, 2020

Kevin De Bruyne scored two brilliant goals and equalled an assist record as David Silva bowed out on a high notet in Manchester City's 5-0 Premier League battering of relegated Norwich City.

Gabriel Jesus' 22nd goal of the campaign – his best return for the club – preceded a moment of brilliance from De Bruyne, who then matched Thierry Henry's record of 20 Premier League assists in a season by teeing up Raheem Sterling for a third at the Etihad Stadium on the final day.

Riyad Mahrez added further gloss prior to De Bruyne masterfully stroking in the hosts' final goal in a wonderful outing, which was Spain great Silva's final outing in England's top flight after 10 years and 309 Premier League appearances.

A greater challenge in the shape of Real Madrid lies in wait as Silva sets his sight on finishing a glittering decade with a Champions League medal.

Onel Hernandez's 20-yard strike being ruled out handed the hosts a reprieve they made the most of 11 minutes in, when Jesus squeezed home after Norwich failed to deal with Sterling's cut-back.

Ben Godfrey made two great blocks to deny Jesus and then Silva as the pressure built but Teemu Pukki passed up a great chance to level when he shot straight at Ederson one-on-one following suspect defending.

De Bruyne duly punished Norwich, showing exquisite feet before lashing an unstoppable effort into the top-right corner from 25 yards.

Silva tested Tim Krul in search of a final Premier League goal and Kyle Walker's fizzed cross narrowly missed the outstretched boot of Jesus.

Christoph Zimmermann was saved by the post when he diverted De Bruyne's cross towards his own goal but the Belgian brilliantly slipped in Sterling to roll in his 20th league goal of the campaign.

Mahrez stroked home a fourth after De Bruyne pressured Kenny McLean, with the latter the former Chelsea midfielder curling in a wonderful fifth to complete the rout.

Thiago Alcantara has an unparalleled level of ambition in his game, according to Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian.

After signing from Bayern Munich in a deal worth £25million last week, Thiago put on a passing clinic as he made his debut in Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Spain international replaced Jordan Henderson at half-time and completed more passes (75) than any Chelsea player in the entire match – it was also the most by a Premier League player to have played a maximum of 45 minutes since full passing data became available in 2003-04.

His vision and ability with both feet has hugely impressed compatriot Adrian, who has been blown away by what he has seen from Liverpool's new midfielder in training.

Adrian told Liverpool's official website: "You can see that he's a different player. He uses right and left like the same leg, he has ambition like totally another person from another planet. You can see him doing passes that nobody sees and shooting with that quality, with that spin he has in both legs.

"Also he's a hard worker – playing in midfield for us is going to help him. For sure, everyone is trying to help him to adapt as quick as possible to our system, to the movement of the players on the pitch but he's clever enough to adapt to play quick.

"You can see him now around Melwood [Liverpool's training ground] like this is the new home of him – the first one coming in, leaving as the last one."

Adrian added: "Thiago is a world-class player. I knew him before when we went to the national team and because we have a few friends between us. He's a top player, he has quality, he has [a] great pass, great shot, vision of the game – a different one.

"So he gives us a lot of help. This season is going to be tough and he gives us that quality that he has.

"Obviously part of this is a great player, fits really well into the dressing room, speaks very good English, so no problem at all. I think he's going to enjoy this season, the first season with us."

  • Chelsea sign Rennes goalkeeper Mendy Chelsea sign Rennes goalkeeper Mendy

Chelsea have signed Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes on a five-year contract, the Premier League club said on Thursday.

The big-spending Blues have reportedly paid just over £20million to bring 28-year-old Mendy to Stamford Bridge.

Mendy's arrival in London will cast doubt over the future of the error-prone Kepa Arrizabalaga, who made another costly mistake in Chelsea's Premier League defeat to Liverpool last weekend.

The towering Mendy helped Ligue 1 side Rennes qualify for the Champions League for the first time last season and now becomes Frank Lampard's eighth new recruit in the transfer window.

Mendy said: "I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It's a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff.

"I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can't wait to get started."

Blues director Marina Granovskaia explained that Petr Cech, Chelsea's former goalkeeper and current technical and performance adviser, picked out Mendy as an ideal candidate.

Granovskaia said: "As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in.

"Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes, he is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club."

Mendy, who will also compete with Willy Caballero for a starting berth, impressed during a three-year spell at Reims before making the switch to Rennes.

He kept 13 clean sheets and conceded just 31 goals in 33 matches in his only full season with Rennes before the French campaign was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Cech also moved from Rennes to Chelsea, making that switch 16 years ago.
