Liverpool youngster Elliott pens professional deal

By Sports Desk July 06, 2020

Harvey Elliott has signed his first professional contract with Liverpool.

The youngster signed for Liverpool from Fulham in 2019, making eight first-team appearances so far this season, though he was not eligible to sign a professional deal until he turned 17 in April.

Elliott made his senior debut in an EFL Cup tie with MK Dons in September, making him the club's second-youngest debutant.

"I think since the first day I've walked in, it's been an indescribable journey so far," Elliott told Liverpool's official website.

"I think now to top it off with my first professional contract is a dream come true for me and my family.

"I'm excited to see what the future holds and I'm just excited to give everything to the club and the fans."

Manager Jurgen Klopp is looking forward to Elliott showing his full potential over the coming seasons, with Liverpool the perfect place for him to develop.

"Brilliant news – really happy," Klopp told the club's website. "Harvey is such an exciting prospect. We all know his qualities – we have seen them this season in the first team and Under-23s.

"I love his attitude, love his enthusiasm, love his bravery, love the fact he has the right amount of football confidence and cheekiness.

"I think the public maybe doesn't know the real Harvey yet and part of that is because we have looked to shield and protect him.

"What is critical – so important – is that he is given time and space to develop. He will get that from us. He needs to be allowed to make mistakes while he learns and not feel more pressure than is right and fair.

"He is young and he is in the early stages of his development still. What is great is that he has the perfect culture here and we will protect him.

"The senior players and the coaches really care about him and are as excited as I am about his future. So, we will all be part of his story as it unfolds."

Elliott's deal follows on the back of a new contract for Curtis Jones, who scored his first Premier League goal in the champions' 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Zaha's long-term future at Selhurst Park has long been in doubt, with Everton having been credited with an interest in the January transfer window.

Speaking last month, Palace boss Roy Hodgson admitted Zaha had revealed his desire to seek a new challenge.

"Wilf has made it clear, ever since I came to the club really, that he would relish a move and would like to move on and find some pastures new," Hodgson said.

"But he's a very valuable player and the club realises his value and appreciates his value and so really everything will depend I guess – as it always does – [on] what sort of offers the club is going to receive for him and how they will equate that with the need to keep him or the need, maybe, to satisfy his wishes, and allow him to go after giving good service to the club for a period of time."

  • Copenhagen need to be 'perfect' against Man Utd, says Solbakken Copenhagen need to be 'perfect' against Man Utd, says Solbakken

Stale Solbakken said Copenhagen needed to be "perfect" to have any chance of upsetting Manchester United in the Europa League.

The Danish side face United in the quarter-finals in Cologne on Monday looking to cause a huge shock.

As they prepare for the 2020-21 Superliga season, Copenhagen overcame Istanbul Basaksehir in the last 16, recording a 3-0 second-leg win on Wednesday.

But Solbakken said only perfection would be enough for his side against United, who have lost just one of their past 23 games.

"In order to [beat United] we have to play perfect, we need a bit of luck. We maybe need a United that doesn't fire on all cylinders," he told a news conference.

"We need to be perfect defensively. We need to take one or two or three chances we get during a game like this. The chances are not great, but it's an advantage for us this is not over 90 minutes but 180 minutes.

"But we have a good feeling after the season we had a week's break and when the players returned from that we were able to get a couple of players ready to play that were vital to us before.

"We have a good feeling after the 3-0 victory, but you should not put your house on us. We'll give everything."
