Lampard rejects Chelsea links to Angel Gomes

By Sports Desk June 30, 2020

Frank Lampard rejected suggestions Chelsea are set to sign Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes.

The 19-year-old midfielder is out of contract at Old Trafford this week and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Monday that he expected Gomes to leave after new terms were not agreed.

Newspaper reports in the UK claimed Gomes had a deal on the table from Chelsea but Lampard told a news conference to preview Wednesday's game at West Ham that this is not something he is aware of.

"I can elaborate to the point that it's never been mentioned at my end. That's it," he said.

Lampard was similarly in no mood to discuss Declan Rice, the West Ham midfielder who has been linked with switching east London for west.

"Declan Rice is a good player, I've known Declan for a long time. He was at Chelsea's academy.

"But there's no talk – I keep saying that about every player that we're asked about – until this season's finished. There's nothing to say."

Looking ahead to who the next transfer might be is perhaps inevitable after Chelsea moved swiftly and in eye-catching fashion to secure Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner from Ajax and RB Leipzig respectively.

From Wednesday, both men officially become Chelsea players and Lampard is pondering how to integrate them as their new team-mates conclude the relaunched Premier League season.

Ziyech has been out of action since March after the Eredivisie was cancelled, while Werner concluded his final Bundesliga campaign with Leipzig at the weekend.

"I'm in the process of arranging that plan now," Lampard explained. "They do become our players, they also are in different positions in the fact that Hakim hasn't played for a long time because of the Dutch league situation, while Timo finished at the weekend.

"We will formulate a plan for them that will look slightly different individually. I'll decide in the meantime how it looks at Cobham, at the training ground – whether that means mixing with the squad or it means some physical work in the short-term for themselves.

"It'll be up to how we arrange the plan because the first issue now is how we finish the season, that's my main focus.

"In terms of the two players individually, we have to make sure they arrive with good fitness levels and freshness levels for next season.

"They will have a longer break than the players we've already got in the squad, so I'll take that firmly into account. When I feel it's the right time to bring them in and around the squad this season, I can do that, if not the absolute priority is making sure they're fit and ready for next."

Lampard will make late calls on Christian Pulisic (calf) and Andreas Christensen (hip) ahead of the game against West Ham, with his team seeking to make it six consecutive wins in all competitions.

Tahith Chong's agent says his client wants to move to the Bundesliga amid reports Werder Bremen are closing in on a loan deal for the Manchester United player.

Chong, 20, signed a contract extension until 2022 at Old Trafford in March, despite speculation Inter were keen on the midfielder.

But first-team opportunities have been hard to come by, with a substitute outing in Wednesday's 2-1 Europa League win over LASK his first appearance since lockdown.

"Tahith would like to join the Bundesliga," his representative Erkan Alkan told Bild.

"We'll talk to Man United about it on Thursday."

That would seem to give something of a green light to Werder, with Bild reporting Alkan held discussions with sporting director Frank Baumann and head of scouting Clemens Fritz.

"I know the player. We'll get an attacking winger. I do not want to say more," said Baumann, according to the newspaper.

If Chong joins Werder, he could serve as a replacement for Milot Rashica, the Kosovo international who is reportedly in the sights of a host of clubs including Liverpool, Wolves, Aston Villa and RB Leipzig.

Barcelona have completed the signing of Sao Paulo's Gustavo Maia and included a €300million release clause in the teenager's deal.

The winger, who will join the club's B team, has signed a five-year deal after impressing in Brazil.

Barca had already paid €1m to cement a purchase option on the 19-year-old and have parted with another €3.5m to secure his services.

Maia, who was nearly sent on loan to Flamengo last year, became a father in December and overcame personal issues to force his way into the starting line-up at the Copinha, where he scored three goals in seven games.

  • Inter confirm permanent Sanchez signing Inter confirm permanent Sanchez signing

Inter have confirmed the signing of Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez on a permanent deal.

Sanchez has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the Serie A club following a successful season-long loan with Antonio Conte's side.

The 31-year-old Chile international joined United from Premier League rivals Arsenal in 2018, but failed to show what he is capable of at Old Trafford.

Sanchez is reported to have joined Inter on a free transfer after United ripped up his contract, which was said to earn him an astonishing £560,000-a-week.

He scored four goals in 29 appearances for the Nerazzurri following his switch to San Siro last August.

Sanchez found the back of the net only five times in 45 matches for the Red Devils after arriving at the club in January 2018 in a deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to Arsenal.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Sanchez would be heading back to Inter following a 2-1 Europa League last-16 second leg victory over LASK on Wednesday.

"I can confirm that he's agreed and we've agreed. Alexis enjoyed his time there," he said.

"They've liked him, so of course that's a good move for him. Wish him all the best. He's a top player that we want to see play his best football.

"For whatever reason, we didn't see the best of Alexis, but he's a top professional and we just wish him all the best."
