Sarri: Juventus don't have characteristics to play with front three

By Sports Desk December 06, 2019

Maurizio Sarri reiterated Juventus cannot play with three forwards as he expressed confidence in his side's ability to bounce back from a disappointing draw with Sassuolo.

Sarri has faced consistent questions this season over the possibility of using Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain in a front three.

Dybala was left on the bench last Sunday as Ronaldo and Higuain started up front in a gripping 2-2 game that saw Juventus surrender top spot in Serie A to Inter.

Third-placed Lazio, who are seven points off the top, are the opposition on Saturday as Juve make the trip to the Stadio Olimpico.

There is unlikely to be a Juve attacking triumvirate on show in the capital, however, with coach Sarri insisting it is not possible to play all three together at present.

"Right now, playing three forwards is difficult due to the characteristics of the players," he told a media conference.

"You can't prohibit Dybala from dropping deep, and at the same time Cristiano's characteristics are not to play too central. We must take some precautions to fill the penalty area more.

"It's normal that after Champions League games there's a drop in energy, mentality and confidence, but from what I've seen in training I'm confident. As always, we have to respond on the pitch, getting three points is always important regardless of the game.

"It will be an important matchday for the teams high up in the table, I hope that our motivations are high.

"Lazio are a strong team with great quality. They are the best in Italy and among the best in Europe for getting into the last 25 metres. We need to keep them away from our area because they are very dangerous.

"Based on the average amount of points that they are picking up, Lazio have to be in the conversation for the fight for top.

"I expect a strong approach from Lazio, who will be very determined. We will have to resist it, come out and dictate the game how we want to."

Lorenzo Insigne's fine solo goal proved the difference in an enthralling encounter as Napoli beat in-form Lazio 1-0 to advance to the Coppa Italia semi-finals.

Elseid Hysaj and Lucas Leiva were dismissed in the opening period, the latter shown a straight red after protesting against a booking, as Napoli handed Lazio just their third loss in 17 games in all competitions.

Insigne guided a cool finish past Thomas Strakosha after dribbling in from the left in the second minute, but Ciro Immobile missed a chance to equalise from the spot eight minutes later - Serie A's leading goalscorer losing his footing and looping his penalty over the crossbar.

Arkadiusz Milik saw a header come back off the post with 20 minutes remaining, with Immobile volleying against the bar before Mario Rui curled an effort against the woodwork in a frantic finale.

However, Napoli held on for a win - just their third since Gennaro Gattuso took over in December - that set up a last-four meeting with Fiorentina or Inter.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be evaluated on Wednesday to see if he will be fit for Juventus' Coppa Italia quarter-final against Roma.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner sat out last week's 4-0 victory over Udinese in the last 16 due to illness.

He returned to the line-up on Sunday and scored Juve's goals in a 2-1 triumph against Parma.

Maurizio Sarri suggested the 34-year-old will not be rested if he is deemed physically capable of turning out against Roma at Allianz Stadium.

"We'll evaluate Ronaldo tomorrow morning. He can play three games in a week, I don't see a huge problem," Sarri said on Tuesday.

"In the last Coppa match he was unwell and now I want to understand if he has fully recovered and if he is ready to play three games.

"[Juan] Cuadrado trained in the gym as a precaution today. Alex Sandro has a problem with the transverse muscle but it's nothing serious. Both will be evaluated.

"Adrien [Rabiot] came out of the last match with a couple of serious knocks. He'll also be evaluated, he's a player with important physical quality even during the recovery between matches.

"Douglas Costa isn't at peak condition yet but he's doing well and is regaining continuity in training."

He added: "Roma are a strong team, therefore it's normal that against them you'll have periods of the match in which you'll suffer.

"It will be important for us to keep our shape and balance, also with different players in attack. However, I haven't decided anything yet, not even the formation."

  • Cavani? PSG can send Mbappe to Tottenham, jokes Mourinho Cavani? PSG can send Mbappe to Tottenham, jokes Mourinho

Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho was unwilling to discuss links to Edinson Cavani but joked his "friends" at Paris Saint-Germain could send him Kylian Mbappe on loan.

Cavani's contract expires at the end of the season and the striker has informed PSG sporting director Leonardo of his desire to leave the Parc des Princes.

The Uruguay international is the club's all-time leading goalscorer but has struggled with injuries in 2019-20 and fallen out of favour since the arrival of Mauro Icardi.

Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid have all been credited with an interest in Cavani, but the Spurs boss refrained from fuelling the reports at a news conference ahead of their game against Norwich City on Wednesday.

However, Mourinho playfully suggested he would be more than happy to bolster his squad with Cavani's PSG team-mate Mbappe.

"I have a very good relationship with Mr Nasser [Al-Khelaifi, PSG president] and Mr Leonardo and I want to keep that great relationship," said Mourinho.

"Good relationships are based on respect and I'm not going to speak about a player from Paris Saint-Germain.

"Unless you want a joke and if they are my friends, they could send Mbappe on loan? More than that, I have nothing else to say."

World Cup winner Mbappe has scored 21 goals in 22 appearances in all competitions for PSG this season.
