Neymar enjoying stronger relationships with 'fun' new PSG signings

By Sports Desk October 22, 2019

Neymar has affirmed he is now happy at Paris Saint-Germain following the arrival of "fun" new team-mates.

The Brazil international attempted to engineer a move back to Barcelona during a turbulent close season.

Negotiations between the clubs failed, leaving Neymar in a precarious position at Parc des Princes.

He insisted the situation is now "all good" in part due to the value of fresh faces in the French capital, along with his close friendship with Kylian Mbappe.

Mauro Icardi, Pablo Sarabia, Ander Herrera and more joined PSG ahead of Thomas Tuchel's second season in charge.

"The vibe there has never stopped being cool. It has always been good," Neymar told OTRO.

"It is the year that has more people who are easy to talk to, to get along with. The new people who arrived are fun, they are focused, they are good players.

"It's a very large squad, so you end up having special affinity with one, two or three. You don't have an affinity with everyone. But, for a good workplace, you need to have a good relationship with everyone.

"And with Kylian it's different. He's an incredible kid, he's joyful, he's happy. Not to mention his football, which is amazing.

"We get along really well both on and off the pitch. I think this makes thing easier, for our game, for our team, because we always help each other, and this is reflected in our team, of course."

Neymar's efforts to leave PSG upset the club's supporters, who booed the world's most expensive player on his return to the team in September.

Four goals in five Ligue 1 games have gone some way to placating the critics and providing evidence behind Neymar's assurance that he is fully committed to performing on the pitch.

"Soon the love will return, God willing," he said of his relationship with the fans.

"It is normal, I understand their feelings too. I understand what goes on, or I can try to understand what goes on in their minds. But I ask them to understand me too.

"I think when you're not happy, regardless of what your job is, you try to change, you try to find new places, a new profession so that you find yourself.

"So this is what I tried to do, but I ended up staying. And I will give it my best."

  • Tuchel: Cavani one of the top number nines in world football Tuchel: Cavani one of the top number nines in world football

Thomas Tuchel believes Manchester United have got one of the world's best number nines in Edinson Cavani as Paris Saint-Germain prepare to face the Red Devils without Marco Verratti.

Cavani joined United on a free transfer in October following the expiration of his contract with PSG, which led him to miss the final three rounds of last season's Champions League.

The Uruguay international, who trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Monday, is PSG's all-time record goalscorer having found the net 200 times during his seven years with the club.

PSG could face Cavani on Tuesday when they welcome United to the Parc des Princes for their 2020-21 Champions League opener.

And coach Tuchel conceded it will be strange to go up against Cavani, whom he has no doubts will be a success at Old Trafford.

"It was a bit sad about the final eight in Lisbon, as was the case with others. It changes nothing for this meeting," Tuchel told a media conference.

"He remains PSG's top scorer. He made history here. It is a bit weird to see him with United."

Asked what United are getting in Cavani, Tuchel replied: "They got a great personality. Very polite, almost kind of a bit shy. Very polite person.

"A hard worker, he will be there in every training [from the] first minute until last minute, every game first second until last second.

"He's living for goals, he's living for scoring. When he scores and when he has the confidence, he's one of the best number nines in world football.

"Hopefully from Wednesday on he can start to convince all of you, tomorrow it's not necessary to prove me right."

PSG will not be able to call on oft-injured midfielder Verratti, who is reportedly set to be out for three weeks with a thigh issue.

Leandro Paredes will also be absent with a muscle injury sustained in the 4-0 Ligue 1 win at Nimes, while a knee problem will keep striker Mauro Icardi sidelined.

Tuchel is, however, hopeful that Marquinhos (groin) and Julian Draxler (hamstring) can feature.

Virgil van Dijk used to be "a little bit too lazy" and "a little bit arrogant" on the pitch but has become one of the world's best defenders, according to Ronald Koeman.

Koeman was Southampton manager when Van Dijk arrived in the Premier League from Celtic in 2015 and also worked with him during his time as head coach of the Netherlands.

The Dutch defender established himself as one of the division's best centre-backs at St Mary's Stadium and in the January transfer window of 2018 completed a £75million move to Liverpool, making him the most expensive defender in the world at the time.

Van Dijk was not dribbled past by a top-flight opponent between March 2018 and August of the following year, while last term he became only the fifth outfield player in Premier League history to contest every minute in a season for the title-winning side.

Koeman, who now coaches Barcelona, praised Van Dijk for erasing the negative aspects that existed in his game when he first arrived at Southampton.

"I think it was great to work with Virgil because he was an open guy in communication. He liked to learn from everybody," Koeman told UEFA.com

"He had to change his personality a little bit because sometimes he was a little bit too lazy. Maybe people will tell you that he was a little bit arrogant in his football.

"We worked really hard, but the credit is for the player. He is now, in my opinion, one of the best defenders we have in football."

Van Dijk is expected to miss the majority of the rest of the 2020-21 season after sustaining knee ligament damage in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Everton that will require surgery.

The 29-year-old has only previously missed one Premier League game for Liverpool since signing.
