Tonga could beat Argentina! - Maradona furious after Copa America loss

By Sports Desk June 17, 2019

Diego Maradona slammed Argentina after their Copa America defeat to Colombia, claiming Tonga could beat Lionel Scaloni's side.

There was yet more international disappointment for Lionel Messi on Saturday as his side lost to goals from Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata in Salvador.

Argentina have reached four of the past five Copa America finals, losing them all, but will need to improve in their remaining Group B games against Paraguay and Qatar if they are to reach the showpiece in Brazil.

Maradona, who inspired Argentina to glory at the World Cup in 1986, was unimpressed with the lack of physicality on show against Carlos Queiroz's Colombia.

"You realise that Tonga can beat us," Maradona told TyC Sports.

"There is a prestige that we built with kicks, with punching."

Argentina are seeking their first major international title since 1993.

The Football Association (FA) has contacted Huddersfield Town after the Championship club released their new home kit on Wednesday.

Huddersfield's announcement set tongues wagging with the Umbro design featuring the name of betting company Paddy Power in a bold sash across the front of the kit.

The club's managing director, Sean Jarvis, said the 2019-20 kit was a "really modern twist on how we feature the famous Paddy Power logo".

He added that "the new 'sash' style logo is really eye-catching and helps maintain our reputation as being innovators too".

But the FA confirmed on Wednesday evening that it had asked Huddersfield for "their observations".

A widely reported statement attributed to an FA spokesperson read: "The FA has clear Kit & Advertising regulations for all club matchday kits.

"If we believe that any club has breached these rules we will look into the matter and, if required, will take the appropriate action.

"We have contacted Huddersfield Town about their 2019/20 kit to seek their observations."

Huddersfield wore the kit in a pre-season friendly midweek, Elias Kachunga, Jonathan Hogg and Josh Koroma getting the goals in a 3-1 win over Rochdale.

  • Trippier thrilled to work under Simeone after completing Atletico Madrid switch Trippier thrilled to work under Simeone after completing Atletico Madrid switch

Kieran Trippier is delighted at the prospect of working under Diego Simeone after completing his move to Atletico Madrid.

England international Trippier officially joined LaLiga giants Atleti from Tottenham on Wednesday, signing a three-year contract in a deal reportedly worth €22million (£20m).

Trippier impressed in England's charge to the World Cup semi-finals at Russia 2018, but struggled to recapture that form for Spurs last term.

Serie A side Napoli expressed firm interest despite the 28-year-old slipping out of the England squad, while Juventus and Manchester United were also linked, but it is Atleti who secured the right-back.

And it would seem having the opportunity to work with Simeone was a major factor in Trippier's move to Madrid.

"It's an amazing feeling. I've always wanted to play abroad and what a place to play," Trippier told Atleti's official website.

"A fantastic team, an unbelievable manager and I'm just looking forward to getting on with it now.

"They've been to some major finals, they've done so well in LaLiga over the years. They have world class players and a brilliant manager.

"I can't wait to work with the manager, learn from the manager and help the team be a success in the future. You can see how close he is with his squad."

Trippier made 38 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham in 2018-19, scoring one goal.

  • Tunisia 0 Nigeria 1: Ighalo secures third place for Super Eagles at the AFCON Tunisia 0 Nigeria 1: Ighalo secures third place for Super Eagles at the AFCON

Odion Ighalo was gifted an early goal as Nigeria claimed third place in the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Tunisia.

Aiming to maintain their perfect record in AFCON third-place play-offs, Nigeria were presented with the lead when Tunisia goalkeeper Moez Ben Cherifia and defender Yassine Meriah combined to tee up Ighalo.

Wahbi Khazri looked sharp as Tunisia rallied, and created his side's best chance when he set up Firas Chaouat for what should have been a simple finish early in the second half.

Chaouat could not take advantage, though, and while Ben Cherifia's excellent save from Samuel Chukwueze kept Tunisia's hopes alive, Nigeria had little trouble holding on to their lead.

Nigeria had the lead inside three minutes, Ighalo tucking home after Ben Cherifia and Meriah made a mess of Jamilu Collins' cross.

Tunisia responded well and would have been level had Ferjani Sassi's header not been cleared off the line.

Ighalo's game came to an end at half-time - the former Watford striker appearing to suffer a hamstring injury.

Khazri's superb throughball put Chaouat through on goal a minute into the second half, but with only the goalkeeper to beat, Tunisia's substitute lashed into the side netting.

Chukwueze's long-range strike looked to be creeping in just after the hour, but Ben Cherifia made a superb save at full stretch.

Ghilane Chaalali bundled himself into shooting range as full-time approached, though a weak effort wide of the upright was all he could muster as Tunisia ended their tournament with a whimper.
